Men’s Lacrosse drops season-opener at USMMA

Jason Reynolds scores twice for Dolphins

KINGS POINT, NY – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Lacrosse team dropped its season-opener on Wednesday with a 22-3 loss at the United State Merchant Marine Academy-Kings Points. Jason Reynolds (Centereach, NY) led the Mount with a pair of goals in the contest.

USMMA scored the first seven goals of the contest, before the Dolphins broke into the scoring column on Mike Shea's (Congers, NY) first tally of the season with 8:10 left in the second quarter. The goal was assisted by Russ Holland (Brooklyn, NY), his first helper of the campaign.

USMMA would score the next two goals following Shea's marker, before Reynolds found the back of the cage for this first of the season with just over 5:30 left before halftime.

The second half opened with USMMA scoring the first eight goals, before Reynolds came through with his second of the contest and of the season with just over a minute left in the third quarter. Both of Reynolds' goals came unassisted, while the second came with the man advantage.

Reynolds led the Dolphins with three shots in the game, while Ryan O'Dougherty (Morristown, NJ) posted a pair of shots on Wednesday. Cody Green (Waldwick, NJ) led the team in groundballs with eight, while Ken Valentine (Centereach, NY), James O'Connell (Elmont, NY), and Mike Nuzzi (Westbury, NY) all scooped four.

Overall in the contest the Dolphins were out-shot 57-8. USMMA also held a 73-30 advantage in groundballs. Mount Saint Vincent went 10-29 in face-offs in the tilt and was successful on 18 of its 38 clearing attempts. The Dolphins went 1-7 in extra man opportunities.

Tom Egan (Nanuet, NY) and Nuzzi each played 30:00 in goal on Wednesday, with Egan making eight saves. Nuzzi came on in the second half and made three stops for the Mount.

USMMA has six players score at least two goals on Wednesday and was led by Brennan Dougherty who had six markers. Robert De Pol led the way with three assists, while Scott Bridge made a pair of saves.

The loss drops the Mount to 0-1 overall on the season. The Dolphins will be back in action on Sunday when they take on Briarcliffe. The road contest is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. in Bethpage.
