Women’s Soccer Suffers Third Straight Loss

McGowan records five shots, Martin makes five saves

Riverdale, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Soccer team suffered its third straight shutout loss on Monday afternoon following a 3-0 non-conference home defeat to Rutgers-Newark. Sophomore Julia McGowan (Pearl River, N.Y.) led the Mount with five shots, while classmate Elizabeth Martin (Lawrenceville, N.J.) made five saves.
 
The Dolphins took the first four shots in the game, before Rutgers-Newark struck with the eventual game winning goal in the 14th minute. Sara Corson netted her eighth goal of the season off a feed from Cristina Estremera at the 13:53 mark of the match.
 
The Scarlet Raiders doubled their lead late in the first half when Emily Corson potted her first goal of the season in the 37th minute. She buried a failed clearing attempt at 36:21 to give the visitors a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
 
Mount Saint Vincent outshot Rutgers-Newark 9-6 in the opening 45 minutes, while the Scarlet Raiders took the only two corner kicks in the opening stanza.
 
The visitors outshot Mount Saint Vincent 10-4 in the second half and picked up the only goal after halftime in the 52nd minute. Sara Corcon scored her second goal of the game when she headed in a pass from Julie Dantoni at 51:07 to close out the scoring in the game.
 
Mount Saint Vincent had a pair of chances in the final five minutes off the foot of Erica Lencsak (Hazlet, N.J.). The first shot was saved and the second attempt in the final minute sailed high for the Mount.
 
McGowan led four players with at least two shots for the Mount, with Kelly Gibison (Waterford Works, N.J.), Lencsak and Alicia Forgione (Lawrenceville, N.J.) all recording a pair of shots in the game for the Dolphins.

Martin closed out the game with five stops, including four after halftime. Diana Carvalho picked up the win in goal for Rutgers-Newark with four saves in the game.
 
Overall, Rutgers-Newark finished with a 16-13 edge in shots and an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Scarlet Raiders held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks, while fouls in the contest were whistled 8-6 against the Dolphins.
 
Monday's loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 1-5 overall on the season. The Dolphins will return to Skyline Conference play on Friday when they travel to Mount Saint Mary. Kick-off with the Knights in Newburgh, N.Y. is set for 7:00 p.m.
