Riverdale, N.Y. – Led by two goals from freshman
Kelly Gibison (Waterford Works, N.J.) and five points from
Julia McGowan (Pearl River, N.Y.), the College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Soccer team eased to its third straight win to start the year with a 9-0 triumph over visiting John Jay.
Mount Saint Vincent would open the scoring in the 23
rd minute on a
Megan DeRosa (Cornwall, N.Y.) tally that would start a string of three goals in 51 seconds. DeRosa finished off a passing play from McGowan and
Shannon Doyle (Central Islip, N.Y.) before Gibision struck twice to open the 3-0 lead. The Mount's second goal came on a penalty kick from Gibsion at 22:46 and the third came after Gibision found the back of the net on a through ball from McGowan at 22:58.
The Dolphins would push the lead to four goals when
Alicia Forgione (Lawrenceville, N.J.) scored her team leading fifth goal of the season off a centering feed from
Courtney LaTorre (Denville, N.J.) at 35:54 before
Victoria Astorino (Warwick, N.Y.) and McGowan each scored their first goals of the season. Astorino finished a pass from Forgione at 40:48 and McGowan tallied her first career goal at 43:33.
The Mount closed the first 45 minutes of play on Saturday with a 22-3 advantage in shots and a 4-0 edge in corner kicks. John Jay goalkeeper Andrea Antoni made 10 stops in the half for the Bloodhounds.
Erin Dailey (East Windsor, N.J.) would get the Mount back into the scoring column in the 59
th minute with her second goal of the season and the Dolphins closed out the scoring in the game with goals from
Caroline Criscuola (North Merrick, N.Y.) and
Nicole Weber (Flushing, N.Y.). The final goal was the first career marker for Weber, coming in the 78
th minute.
Mount Saint Vincent finished the game with eight different goal scorers and is now outscoring its opponents on the season 21-1. McGowan finished with a goal and three assists, with Criscuola and Forgione each posting a goal and a helper.
Freshman
Elizabeth Martin (Lawrenceville, N.J.) picked up her second straight win in goal for the Dolphins after making four saves in just over 54 minutes of work. Kelli Doherty came on to play the final 51:55 for John Jay and made four stops for the Bloodhounds.
For the game, Mount Saint Vincent finished with a 29-4 edge in shot and a 23-4 edge in shots on goal. The Dolphins took all seven corner kicks in the game and fouls were whistled 8-6 against the Dolphins.
Saturday's win pushes Mount Saint Vincent to a perfect 3-0 on the season. Next up for the Dolphins is a trip to the College of Staten Island on September 9. Kick-off is set for 4:00 p.m.
