Riverdale, N.Y. – For the second time this week, the College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Soccer team picked up its first ever win against an opponent when it downed St. Joseph's-L.I. on Friday by a score of 3-2. Freshman
Megan DeRosa (Cornwall, N.Y.) led the offensive charge with two goals in the game.
Mount Saint Vincent fell behind by a goal late in the first half on Friday when Jennifer Martino scored her fifth goal of the season in the 37
th minute for the Golden Eagles. She tucked a shot inside the far corner after taking a pass from Claire Brady.
Just under four minutes later Mount Saint Vincent would tie the score when
Joyce Pagliuca (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) evened the game at a goal apiece at the 40:29 mark. She took a through ball from
Lauren Tate (Toms River, N.J.) and chipped a shot over the St. Joseph's keeper for her fifth marker of the year.
At halftime, St. Joseph's held a slim 8-7 edge in shots and took the only corner kick of the period.
Elizabeth Martin (Lawrenceville, N.J.) made a single save in the half for the Dolphins.
DeRosa would break the 1-1 tie early in the second half when she converted a penalty kick in the 54
th minute for her 10
th goal of the year. She would add her team leading 11
th goal of the season and fifth game wining tally at the 76:03 mark when she buried a pass from
Caroline Criscuola (North Merrick, N.Y.).
Trailing by two goals, St. Joseph's would slice its deficit in half when Joann Murino scored an unassisted goal with 47 seconds left in regulation. The goal would be the final shot of the game as the Mount moved to 1-10 all-time against the Golden Eagles.
DeRosa recorded her third multi-goal game of the season and has now tallied six times in the team's last three games. She leads the squad with 11 goals and 29 points through the season's first 11 games. Pagluica scored for the fourth straight game on Friday and became the fifth player to reach double-figures in points on the season.
Martin picked up her seventh win of the season in goal after making four stops in the game. She has 28 saves on the season and holds a 1.21 goals against average. Katie McGarrell stopped four Mount Saint Vincent shots in the loss for St. Joseph's.
The Dolphins closed out the game with a 20-16 edge in shots overall and a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal. The Golden Eagles took two of the three corner kicks in the game, while fouls in the game went against the Mount 13-7.
Friday's victory improves Mount Saint Vincent's overall record to 9-2 and its league mark to 2-1. Next up for the Mount is a non-conference road game at St. Elizabeth on Sunday. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
