(Riverdale, NY) – Sophomore Marie Garcia (Medford, MA/Medford HS), playing in only her fifth collegiate soccer game, scored her first career goal off of a gorgeous pass from Melissa Garganta (Kearney, NJ/Kearney HS) in the 71st minute to give Mount Saint Vincent their first lead of the game en route to a stunning 4-2 upset win over Skyline Conference rival Mount Saint Mary, in a game played in Riverdale, New York. The win marked the first Skyline Conference win for Mount Saint Vincent (3-2, 1-2 Skyline Conference) since the 2002 season, and matched their 2004 win total.
Garcia, who entered the game late in the first half, accepted a pass from Garganta at the top of the box, took a quick step, and rifled a shot past Blue Knight goalie Jessica Thibault (Watertown, NY/Sacred Heart) for what proved to be the game winner. Garcia's heroics came only 53 seconds after sophomore Katherine Gentsch (Staten Island, NY/Curtis HS) tied the score after an incredible pass inside the box by freshman Jessica McBain (Troy, NY/Troy HS). Gentsch and Garcia's heroics were part of a four-goal second half outburst by Mount Saint Vincent, who trailed 2-0 at the 56:48 mark before scoring four straight goals to finish the contest.
McBain and Garganta also scored for the Dolphins, who out-shot Mount Saint Mary, 35-8, and took 12 corner kicks to Mount Saint Mary's zero corner kicks. Had it not been for a yeoman's effort by Thibault, who made 15 saves, including a stop of a first half penalty kick, the score could have been even more lop-sided.
Scoring goals for Mount Saint Mary (3-5, 0-1 Skyline Conference) were Antoinette Carty (Bronx, NY/Walton) and Kaitlin Hunt (Wolcott, CT/Wolcott).
Next up for Mount Saint Vincent is a home date with defending Skyline Conference champion, Stevens, on Monday, Sept. 25 at 4:00 p.m. The game will be played at Purchase College in Purchase, NY.
