This was Mount Saint Vincent's first ever win over St. Elizabeth as the Mount improved to 7-5 overall and 3-0 in the Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference (HVWAC) after finishing the 2004 season with a 3-10 overall record.
For Gentsch, it was the second consecutive game in which she scored two goals as the forward scored twice during Mount Saint Vincent's 3-0 win over John Jay on Tuesday. She now leads Mount Saint Vincent with 12 goals and 26 points for the season. Gentsch scored to give the Mount a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute off of an assist by Cynthia Osorio (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside HS). The lead was doubled two minutes later when Osorio scored a spectacular goal in transition off of an assist by Kaitlin Whalley (West Babylon, NY/St. John the Baptist).
St. Elizabeth, however, chipped back, scoring in transition during the final minute of play of the first half to cut the lead to 2-1 after 45 minutes. With 10 minutes remaining in the game, the Eagles tied the score on a corner kick, and the game appeared to be heading into a possible overtime session.
However, that's when Gentsch stepped in. With four minutes remaining in regulation, the forward accepted a pass from Frank, and blasted a shot into the low corner for the lead. Two minutes later, Frank tallied her second goal of the season to provide the Dolphins some insurance and the 4-2 final.
Mount Saint Vincent was also led by another solid performance by sophomore goalie Alexis Alessi (Rockville Centre, NY/Oceanside HS), who made seven saves, several of which were spectacular.
Mount Saint Vincent has little time to celebrate its victory as the Dolphins face their biggest challenge of the season on Sunday, Oct. 23 when they Mount travels to play the College of Staten Island at 2:00 p.m. Like Mount Saint Vincent, Staten Island is undefeated in the HVWAC, and this game will go a long way in determining the eventual HVWAC regular season champion.
