New York - The College of Mount Saint Vincent's softball team had a tremendous start to Skyline Conference play this weekend. Not only did the Dolphins sweep both Sarah Lawrence College and St. Joseph's University Long Island across four games on Saturday and Sunday, but the victories were met with major milestones, most notably a fantastic perfect game by senior
Jocelyn Vega.
CMSV is a perfect 4-0 against conference opponents entering a weekend series finale against Purchase College on Sunday afternoon.Â
FreshmanÂ
Mila Gutierrez set the standard for the major weekend by head coach
Kevin Carbon and his squad. The Morgan Hill, California native got the call for game one against the Gryphons and took a perfect game into the fifth and final inning. She did allow a hit with one out left in the contest, but it was a minor mark in an otherwise spotless box score. Gutierrez allowed just one unearned run, lowering her season's ERA to 1.40.Â
CMSV's offense put the game out of reach of their opponents immediately. The Dolphins batted around in the first inning, compiling nine runs, including the first career grand slam in freshman
Sabrina Colon's career, as well as RBI from Vega,
Simone Caruso,
Katie Hutter and
Sierra Romero.
Kaitlin Cirillo and
Nichole Reyes would drive in runs the following inning, putting the mercy rule in place. Seven of the nine starters registered at least one hit.Â
The second game featured one of the greatest pitching performances in CMSV history. Vega not only threw a perfect game against Sarah Lawrence, but retired the first 13 batters via strikeout and finished with 14 in just five innings. The Dolphins offense put up six runs across the first three innings of action, including a two-run home run by Vega herself. Romero and
Viviana Meneses had perfect days at the dish, while Gutierrez crushed the first home run of her career as well.Â
The momentum carried into Saturday's double header. CMSV jumped out to an early 3-0 lead agains the Golden Eagles, thanks to a three RBI triple from Vega and a groundout by Caruso that brought Vega home. St. Joe's wouldn't go away quietly, eventually taking the lead in the fourth by the score of 5-4. Vega continued her monster weekend with a solo shot in the top half of the fifth to tie the game at five while freshman
Madyson Epps touched home plate on a wild pitch. With the game knotted up six going into the final inning, an Epps single would eventually be the game winning run.Â
Freshman
Serena Duran came in relief of fellow classmate
Savannah Autobee and brought home the win, pitching in 3.1 innings and allowing just one run on one hit to go along with four strikeouts.Â
The second game, however, was similar to the Sarah Lawrence series. CMSV would win by mercy rule once again, with Caruso,
Shaniya Serrano and
Katie Hutter each driving in a pair of runners. Speaking of Hutter, the junior captain pitched a complete game one hitter, good for her fourth win this season.Â
The Dolphins will look to continue their winning ways on Sunday when they take on Purchase College to complete their weekend of games.Â
