Duran's No Hitter Highlights Dolphins Dominance Over York

Bellrose, NY - The College of Mount Saint Vincent's softball team played against their second CUNY opponent, this time taking on York College after splitting with John Jay College on Tuesday. The Dolphins were the most dominant they've been all season, defeating the Cardinals in both games by a combined score of 23-1, including a no hitter from freshman Serena Duran, the best pitching performance in her young career. The victories improved CMSV's record to 9-5 in 2023.

As previously mentioned, the star of game one was Duran. The freshman hurler has been off to a hot start this season - she entered Wednesday with a 2.17 ERA in four games thus far - and the game furthered that sentiment. The first-year standout from California threw in all five innings for the Dolphins, striking out seven Cardinals while walking just two. The performance improved her record to a perfect 3-0, while her ERA dropped to an impressive 1.73.

The offense, meanwhile, was equally as impressive. The Dolphins compiled nine total hits, with Kelly Murphy, Sierra Romero and Sabrina Colon - the top three hitters in head coach Kevin Carbon's lineup - had two hits apiece. CMSV jumped out to an early lead, as Colon, Katie Hutter, Ruby Acosta and Shaniya Serrano each drove in runs in the first inning, putting the game out of reach. Hutter would finish game one with a team-best three RBI while Colon and Serrano had two each.

Hutter took the mound in game two for the Dolphins, and picked up where Duran left off. The senior allowed just two hits in a complete game, one run performance, where she also struck out nine batters.

The Dolphins totaled 14 hits in the second contest, with eight of the nine original starters registering at least one hit. Duran's success on the mound translated to the plate, as the freshman started in center field and had a team-best three hits to go along with two RBI, two runs and a walk. Serrano plated four runs of her own while Liana Cabeza and Kaitlin Cirillo walked twice each.

The Dolphins will look to continue their winning ways this weekend. They'll head to New Jersey and take on Saint Elizabeth University in a double header on Saturday.
