Morristown, NJ - Winners in three of their last four games, the College of Mount Saint Vincent's softball team took the buses to New Jersey on Saturday afternoon, challenging Saint Elizabeth University in the team's third consecutive non-conference double header. The Dolphins jumped out to an early advantage, but the Eagles mounted a late game comeback, resulting in a win for the host team. The second game of the double header was called due to weather conditions.
The Dolphins are now 9-6 overall as they enter Skyline Conference play this upcoming weekend.
Senior captain
Jocelyn Vega got things going in the top of the first, as her RBI single put the Dolphins on the board. Sophomore
Sierra Romero would score on a wild pitch and
Katie Hutter would drive home Vega, resulting in three run lead in favor of CMSV before the Eagles could come to bat.
After Saint Elizabeth score two of their own in the bottom of the third to cut their deficit to one, the Dolphins would immediately respond. Both
Mila Gutierrez and
Kelly Murphy would drive home runs on bunts, while Romero reached on an error to bring home Murphy, capping off a four run fourth inning that would extend the Dolphins' lead to five.
Unfortuantely for CMSV, they'd be blanked on the scoreboard the rest of the way, all the while the Eagles would score six runs in the final two innings to secure the win.
Freshman
Savannah Autobee took the mound for the Dolphins and surrendered seven runs on 11 hits in 4.2 innings of work. Classmate
Serena Duran would finish the game, going 1.1 innings with two walks and a strikeout.
Vega led the way offensively for CMSV, registering three hits in four at-bats while collecting an RBI. Muphy would score a team-high two runs while Gutierrez had a pair of hits of her own.
Next up for the Dolphins is Skyline Conference play, and they'll kick it off next Sunday against Sarah Lawrence College.
