Box Score Riverdale, NY - The College of Mount Saint Vincent's women's basketball team looked to finish the year on a high note, as they took on Wesleyan University on New Year's Eve. The Dolphins will have to wait another day to get their next win, as the home team fell to the Cardinals by eight points.
The Dolphins opened the game with a quick basket from Kira Villegas, but the scoring opportunities were few and far between in a first quarter that saw both sides play strong defense. The game would remain a one possession affair for the majority of play, with the Cardinals making it a five point contest at the buzzer. Sophomore Shania Wolfe-White led the way over the first 10 minutes of play with four points off two strong layup attempts.
The second quarter was a different story. The Cardinals scored 17 points to CMSV's six, with the visitors knocking down four of six three point attempts. The Dolphins failed to find a rhythm offensively, turning the ball over seven times despite causing Wesleyan to turn the ball over eight times of their own. The Cardinals scoring frenzy gave them a 16 point edge heading into halftime.
The offensive woes for CMSV continued into the third, with the team scoring just two points with less than four minutes left in the period. Amber Been would close out the third with a three at the buzzer, setting the stage for an impressive fourth quarter, despite the final result.
The senior guard from the Bronx would go on to score 12 of her 23 points in the final 10 minutes, including a stretch run that saw the Dolphins cut it to single digits with 1:45 left in regulation. Despite getting hot towards the end of the contest - including back to back possessions with caused turnovers leading to points - CMSV couldn't climb out of the hole. The Cardinals would go on to win by the score of 52-44.
Been would register a season-high eight steals, seven rebounds, two assists and a block to go along with her game-high point total. Villegas finished with nine points while shooting 40% from three, while Wolfe-White and Melanieann Broderick combined for 10 points of their own. Broderick would also lead the way with 12 rebounds.
With non-conference play in the rearview mirror, the Dolphins now set their sights on Manhattanville College. CMSV will challenge their Skyline foe this coming Tuesday in the Sharp Center.
