Riverdale, N.Y. - In the first ever lacrosse game contested on campus, the College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Lacrosse squad dropped hard fought Skyline Conference decision to visiting Sage by a score of 14-12. Senior
Kelly Fraser (Staten Island, N.Y.) was one of six different goal scorers for the Dolphins, netting five goals in the game.
Mount Saint Vincent raced out to a 5-0 lead over the first 5:26 of the contest on Saturday with
Shannon Steimel (Shoreham, N.Y.) and Fraser each scoring twice. Following Fraser's second of the game at the 24:34 mark of the first half, the Mount went nearly 16 minutes without a tally.
Sage scored four straight goals over a 10:35 stretch to pull to with 5-4 on a Shirah Fudin marker at the 13:05 mark of the opening period. The Gators scored three man-up goals in the first half and outscored the Dolphins 6-1 over the final 23:40 of the period to pull even at 6-6 heading into halftime.
Mount Saint Vincent held a 20-13 advantage in shots before halftime and a 9-3 edge in draw controls prior to the intermission. Fudin finished the opening 30 minutes with four goals for Sage and Monica Koralus assisted on a pair of goals.
Fraser opened the scoring in the second half with her third goal of the game to give the Dolphins back a one goal lead, but three straight tallies from the visitors gave them their first lead of the game. Koralus tied the score at 7-7 and Shannon Rossi scored the Gators' fourth man-up goal of the game to give Sage an 8-7 lead with 20:02 left in regulation.
The Mount came back with goals from
Ardiana Mehmetaj (North Salem, N.Y.) and Fraser to knot the score at 9-9 before the team alternated the next six goals.
Kayla Carigliano (Clarkstown, N.Y.) scored with 4:41 left in regulation to tie the score at 12-12.
With the game tied at 12-12, Fudin scored her seventh and eighth goals of the game in the final 2:52 of the game to snap Sage's four game skid. The game winner came at 2:52 and the Gators' insurance marker came with 2:04 left on the second half clock.
Fudin closed an impressive day with eight goals and 10 points, with Koralus adding four goals and four assists for Sage. Koralus picked up nine groundballs to lead the Gators with Alyssa Nellis winning four draw controls. Jenna Jacot closed the game with three caused turnovers for the visitors.
Fraser's scoring output on Saturday gives her 20 goals on the season and with six points she moves into the team lead in the category with 28. She added seven groundballs and three draw controls. Steimel and
Erin Maloney (Staten Island, N.Y.) each scored twice and Mehmetaj finished the strong day with eight draw controls and four groundballs.
Senior goalie
Kacie McCormack (Mahopac, N.Y.) finished the game with 12 saves for the Dolphins and added a groundball. Jackie St. Pierre earned the win for Sage with 19 stops and a groundball.
Mount Saint Vincent outshot Sage in the game 36-27 and won twice as many draw controls in the game with an 18-9 advantage in the category. Sage won the groundball battle 33-28 and went 4-for-4 in free-position chances.
With Saturday's loss, Mount Saint Vincent falls to 1-10 overall on the season and to 0-6 in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins will close out the regular season on April 25 when they welcome Maritime to the Athletic Field at Marillac. Opening Draw is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
