Newburgh, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Lacrosse team saw its losing skid reach six games on Saturday afternoon following a 20-10 road league loss at Mount Saint Mary. Sophomore
Shannon Steimel (Shoreham, N.Y.) scored five times to lead the Dolphins and senior
Kelly Fraser (Staten Island, N.Y.) added four markers.
Katie Gattoni gave the Knights and early 1-0 lead with a goal 1:07 into the contest, before Steimel and Fraser scored back-to-back goals just over three minutes apart to give the Dolphins their only lead of the game, a 2-1 advantage with 25:14 left in the opening period.
Fraser's 10
th goal of the season that gave the Mount the advantage would be the Dolphins' last goal of the first half as Mount Saint Mary scored the final nine goals of the half to carry a 10-2 advantage into the intermission. Gattoni scored four times in the period to lead the Knights.
Mount Saint Mary held a 25-10 advantage in shots at halftime and won the groundball battle in the first half 21-12. The Knights also dominated draw controls before halftime, winning 10 of the 13 contested.
The Dolphins scored eight times in the second half, but could not pull closer than the eight goal halftime disadvantage. Steimel scored four times in the second half, with Fraser netting three goals for the Dolphins. Catherine Mass (West Hartford, Conn.) tallies her second goal of the season with 4:15 left in regulation time.
With her scoring output on Saturday, Steimel holds the team lead in goals with 19 and is the Dolphins' leader in points with 25. Fraser is second in points with 20 after scoring four times on Saturday.
Sophomore
Rachel Steimel (Shoreham, N.Y.) picked up a team best seven groundballs against the Knights and caused a game-high five turnovers.
Ardiana Mehmetaj won four draw controls and picked up two groundballs with
Kayla Carigliano (Clarkstown, N.Y.) and Fraser each winning three draw controls.
Mount Saint Mary was led by Gattoni's four goals and showed seven different players with at least a pair of markers. Nicole Scicutella finished a strong day with three goals and five assists with Claire Duffy contributing three goals and two assists. Gattoni picked up seven groundballs to lead the Knights and Duffy won eight draw controls.
Senior
Kacie McCormack (Mahopac, N.Y.) rounded out the day with 18 saves in goal for Mount Saint Vincent and three groundballs, while Carly Lennon earned the win in goal for the Knights with nine stops and a pair of groundballs.
For the day, Mount Saint Mary held a 43-20 edge in overall shots and a 38-19 advantage in shots on goal. The Knights won the groundball battle 36-21 and took the advantage in draw controls 22-10.
Saturday's loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 1-8 overall on the season and to 0-4 in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins will be back in action on Tuesday when they take on Purchase. The game will be played at the Torne Valley Sports Complex in Hillburn, N.Y. and is scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m.
