Carigliano scores goal, Mehmetaj wins three draw controls

Hillburn, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Lacrosse team dropped its third straight game on Monday evening following a 15-1 non-conference loss to visiting Kean. Freshman Kayla Carigliano (Clarkstown, N.Y.) scored the Dolphins' lone goal and sophomore Ardiana Mehmetaj (North Salem, N.Y.) won three draw controls.
 
Kean raced out to an early lead on Monday, scoring four times inside the first 10 minutes. Guilia Vitolo scored three straight goals for the Cougars over a two-and-a-half minute stretch. Kean would add five more goals over the final 14:43 of the first half, including two from Eliza Clark, to carry a commanding 9-0 lead into halftime.
 
The Cougars dominated the first period on Monday, outshooting Mount Saint Vincent 16-4 after 30 minutes and holding a 17-2 advantage in groundballs. Mount Saint Vincent went 1-for-7 in clearing attempts before halftime and Kean won nine of the 10 draw controls taken.
 
After Kean scored the first three goals of the season half to take a 12-0 lead, Carigliano got the Dolphins on the board at the 15:45 mark of the second half off an assist from Shannon Steimel (Shoreham, N.Y.). Kean went on to score the final three goals of the game, including two from Samantha Gnapp, close out the 14 goal decision.
 
Carigliano scored her team leading 10th goal of the season for the Dolphins and Steimel picked up her team leading fourth assist of the season on the goal. Mehmetaj added two groundballs to her draw control total with Rachel Steimel (Shoreham, N.Y.) causing two turnovers and collecting three groundballs.
 
Vitolo led the Kean scoring attack with six goals and seven points with Clark and Knapp scoring three goals apiece. Brittany Ballack won a game-high four draw controls and joined Jordan Blanda with a team-high four groundballs.

Senior Kacie McCormack (Mahopac, N.Y.) suffered the loss in goal, making eight saves in the game. Nikki Apostolopoulos picked up the win without making a save. Shauna LaMaina saw just under 17 minutes of action, making three stops.
 
For the game, Mount Saint Vincent was outshot 28-6, including 23-4 in shots on goal. Kean held the advantage in groundballs 24-10 and draw controls 13-5.
 
Monday's loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 1-5 overall on the season. The Dolphins will return to conference play on Thursday when they play host to St. Joseph's-L.I. Opening Draw is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Tibbetts Brook Park.
