Kelly Fraser (Staten Island, N.Y.) and 17 saves from goalie
Kacie McCormack (Mahopac, N.Y.), the College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Lacrosse team picked up its first win of the season with a 14-10 non-conference victory over Bard on Friday afternoon.
After allowing the first goal of the game, Mount Saint Vincent ripped off the next five goals to pull in front by four halfway through the opening period.
Ardiana Mehmetaj (North Salem, N.Y.) got the Dolphins on the board before Fraser scored three of the next four goals for the Dolphins in her first action of the season.
Bard pulled to within 5-4 with three straight goals, including two from Joanna Regan, but the Mount scored three of the final four goals of the half to head into the intermission leading 8-5. Fraser scored three more goals in the final eight minutes of the half to finish the period with six markers.
Mount Saint Vincent was outshot in the first half 19-13, but held a 14-10 advantage in groundballs. Draw controls before halftime were even at 7-7, while the Dolphins went a perfect 9-for-9 in clearing chances.
Bard potted the first two goals of the second half on Friday to get to within 8-7, before Mount Saint Vincent opened the game up with four straight tallies to take a 12-7 lead with 20:53 left in regulation.
Kayla Carigliano (Clarkstown, N.Y.) scored twice for the Mount and
Shannon Steimel (Shoreham, N.Y.) scored the eventual game winning goal with 22:20 left to play.
Bard would get as close as three goals in the middle stages of the second half, but a pair of goals from Steimel moved the Dolphins in front 14-9 with just under 10 minutes showing on the second half clock.
Mount Saint Vincent had five different goal scorers in the game, led by seven markers and nine points from Fraser. Steimel finished with three goals and an assist with Carigliano finishing with two goals, two groundballs and a pair of draw controls.
Mehmetaj led the Mount with five draw controls and added a goal, while
Rachel Steimel (Shoreham, N.Y.) led the way with six groundballs.
Erin Maloney (Staten Island, N.Y.) picked up four groundballs for the Dolphins and
Catherine Maas (West Hartford, Conn.) posted three draw controls and a goal.
Bard got three goals and five points from Regan and three goals from Gemma Godfrey. Regan led all players with nine groundballs and led the team with four draw controls.
McCormack made a season-high 17 saves for the Mount, including 11 stops in the first half. Kaylynn Tan made the start in goal for Bard and stopped 11 shots.
Overall, Mount Saint Vincent was outshot 32-29, while the Dolphins held a 25-20 edge in groundballs. Bard won two more draw controls than the Mount and the Dolphins went 12-for-14 in clearing chances.
At 1-2 overall on the season, Mount Saint Vincent will be back in action on March 25 when they play host King's (Pa.). Opening Draw is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
