Mount Saint Vincent Suffers First Home Loss Of The Season

Riverdale, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Basketball team fell for the first time at home this season and dropped consecutive games for the first time all year following a hard fought 59-53 loss to conference front runner Farmingdale State. Senior Kelly Fraser (Staten Island, N.Y.) posted her team leading 10th double-double of the season in the game.
 
The Dolphins got off to a quick start on Tuesday, jumping out to an 11-4 lead on a Fraser lay-in with 15:19 left in the first half. The Dolphins would spread their lead to 16-8 on a Theresa Carey (Hampton Bays, N.Y.) three-pointer at the 12:04 mark of the first half to take their largest lead of the game.
 
Following the Carey bucket, Farmingdale State went on a 14-0 run, covering 5:17, to pull in front 22-16 with just under seven minutes left before halftime. Carey would stop the scoreless drought with a three-point field goal, but the Rams carried a 33-22 lead into the break after scoring 25 of the final 30 points of the first half.
 
Despite shooting just 31.6-percent from the floor in the first half, Farmingdale State forced 12 Mount Saint Vincent turnovers in the first 20 minutes, leading to a 16-2 edge in points off of miscues. Andrea Desvignes led all players at the break with 14 points for the Rams, while Fraser paced the Mount with eight points.
 
Farmingdale State held the lead the entire second half on Tuesday, but Mount Saint Vincent strung together a 14-5 run to slice its disadvantage to 48-46 on a Christina Barone (Staten Island, N.Y.) fast break bucket with 7:07 left in regulation.
 
The Rams would spread their lead back to five points on a three-point play from Marlania Sherman and got out to a 54-48 lead on a Desvignes three-point field goal in transition with 4:45 remaining in regulation.
 
Mount Saint Vincent put together one more push and to get back to within 55-53 on a Fraser jumper with 1:55 to play, but Farmingdale State went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line in the last 21 seconds to secure the season sweep over the Dolphins.
 
Mount Saint Vincent shot 40.6-percent in the second half and held Farmingdale State to a 22.5-percent effort after halftime. Fraser netted 15 points on 5-for-13 shooting after the break.
 
Fraser finished the game leading all scorers with 23 points on 9-for-22 shooting from the floor. She added 20 rebounds, one off her career-high for caroms, and totaled two assists and a steal for the Dolphins.
 
Senior Nicole Oliver (Carmel, N.Y.) and Carey each scored eight points in the game, with Carey hauling in a career-high 12 rebounds. Barone handed out seven assists for the Dolphins and led the team with three steals.
 
Desvignes led Farmingdale State with 21 points and totaled 10 rebounds to go along with seven steals. Nicole Lanteri totaled 12 points and five steals, while Nailah Cherry and Sherman posted four blocked shots apiece.
 
For the game, Mount Saint Vincent shot 32.3-percent from the floor and 16.7-percent from three-point range. Farmingdale State held a 20-5 edge in points off of turnovers in the game and a 15-4 edge in fast break points.
 
Following Tuesday's loss Mount Saint Vincent falls to 13-5 overall and to 4-3 in Skyline Conference play. Next up for the Dolphins is a trip to Old Westbury on Thursday. Tip-off with the Panthers is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
