Kelly Fraser (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored five goals and freshman
Shannon Steimel (Shoreham, N.Y.) posted four points as the College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Lacrosse team scored its second straight win with a 10-7 triumph on the road at Purchase on Monday afternoon.
In a low scoring first half, the Dolphins scored the first four goals of the game to take a 4-1 advantage into the halftime intermission. Fraser got the scoring started at the 28:24 mark before
Melina Mezzanotte (Shirley, N.Y.) and Steimel scored 19 seconds apart to push the Dolphins in front 3-0 with 24:59 left before the break.
Fraser potted her second goal of the half with just under eight minutes left to get Mount Saint Vincent out in front by four, before Nathalie Lavelanet tallied for Purchase with just over three minutes left in the period to get the Panthers' deficit down to three goals.
Mount Saint Vincent held a slim 12-10 advantage in shots over the first 30 minutes of the game and an 18-8 edge in groundballs. Purchase won four of the six draw controls contested in the first half of play.
Samantha Rich brought Purchase to within two goals 19 seconds into the second half, but the Dolphins quickly got the advantage back to four goals on consecutive tallies from Fraser. She got her third goal of the game at the 29:07 mark and her fourth of the tilt with just under 22 minutes left in regulation time.
Purchase climbed back to within two goals again when Maria Papp and Rich scored back-to-back goals to get the deficit to 6-4, but the Mount scored four of the next five goals to open a 10-5 advantage. Mezzanotte and Steimel scored 14 seconds apart to give the Dolphins a 8-4 lead and Mezzanotte and Fraser scored back-to-back to push the lead out to five goals with 2:33 left in regulation time.
Fraser's five goals move her team leading total to 32 on the season. She added a draw control and a caused turnover to the winning effort. Steimel added two assists to her two goals and chipped in with two groundballs.
Mezzanotte won three draw controls to go along with three goals with
Laura Carr (Franklin Square, N.Y.) and
Jessica McAllister (Floral Park, N.Y.) each adding an assist. Carr added three groundballs, while
Ardiana Mehmetaj (North Salem, N.Y.) and
Colleen Walsh (Manchester, Vt.) each scooped four.
Gabriella Astorino (Warwick, N.Y.) led the Mount with five groundballs.
Rich and Lavelanet each scored three times for Purchase, with Rich winning seven draw controls. Mikaela Connors picked up a team-high four groundballs for the Panthers.
Junior
Kacie McCormack (Mahopac, N.Y.) earned the win in goal for the Dolphins on Monday after making nine saves, including five in the first half. She added a groundball to the win for the Mount. Jess Lindsay took the loss for Purchase, stopping 13 Mount Saint Vincent shots.
The Dolphins finished the game with a 25-23 edge in shots and a 26-16 advantage in groundballs. Purchase won the draw control battle 10-6.
With the win on Monday, Mount Saint Vincent improves to 5-7 on the season and closes out the league schedule at 3-4. The Dolphins will round out the regular season on Wednesday afternoon when they play host to Scranton. Opening Draw at Tibbetts Brook Park is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
