Albany, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Lacrosse team dropped its third straight contest and its fifth in the last six outings on Thursday with a 17-15 road loss at league foe Sage. Junior
Kelly Fraser (Staten Island, N.Y.) was one of five players with at least two goals, scoring four times for the Dolphins.
Mount Saint Vincent jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the early stages of Thursday's contest, netting three goals in a four minute stretch.
Katie Coyle (Yorktown, N.Y.),
Shannon Steimel (Shoreham, N.Y.) and
Melina Mezzanotte (Shirley, N.Y.) scored for the Dolphins, with
Jessica McAllister (Floral Park, N.Y.) picking up an assist.
Following Mezzanotte's goal, the Dolphins would score just two more times before halftime. Starting with a Kimberlee Carr goal at the 19:19 mark of the first half, the Gators outscored the Dolphins 11-2 to carry a 12-5 lead into halftime. Carr scored four times for Sage over the run and Lindsay Millett recorded two assists.
Sophomore
Brittany DeGennaro (Manorville, N.Y.) got the Mount on the board first in the second half off an assist from Coyle to bring the Dolphins to within 12-6. After Sage scored two straight goals, the Mount ripped off three straight goals and six of the next eight to get the deficit to four goals with 11:09 left in regulation. Fraser and Mezzanotte each scored twice of the stretch for the Mount.
Mallory Hansen pushed the Sage advantage back to 17-12 with 10:58 left in the contest before a final run for the Dolphins came up two goals short. Fraser scored consecutive goals 36 seconds apart and DeGennaro scored her second of the game to get the Dolphins to the final 17-15 disadvantage with 6:28 left in the game. After getting to within two, the Dolphins would be held to just one shot the remainder of the contest.
Shirah Fundin netted five goals for the Gators, while Carr and Hansen scored four times each for Sage. Millett added three points and six draw controls and Jordan Conroy picked up three groundballs.
Fraser added a caused turnover and a draw controls to her scoring output and Mezzanotte finished the night with three goals and two draw controls. Steimel and Coyle each posted a goal and assist and DeGennaro posted two goals.
Ardiana Mehmetaj (North Salem, N.Y.) led the Dolphins with five caused turnovers and won three draw controls. McAllister posted a team-high five draw controls to go along with a goal and an assist, while
Kaitlyn Gaynor (Island Park, N.Y.) and
Colleen Walsh (Manchester, Vt.) posted four and three caused turnovers, respectively.
Junior
Kacie McCormack (Mahopac, N.Y.) made 10 saves in goal for the Dolphins, including six in the second half. She picked up two groundballs and caused a turnover. Jackie St. Pierre stopped 19 shots and totaled three groundballs and three caused turnovers.
Mount Saint Vincent finished the game with a 40-32 edge in shots, while Sage posted a 16-11 advantage in groundballs. Sage scored eight free-position goals in the game and held a 19-15 advantage in draw controls.
Thursday's loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 3-7 overall and to 1-4 in league play. The Dolphins will return to action on Saturday afternoon when the play host to Old Westbury. Opening Draw at Tibbetts Brook Park is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
