Staten Island, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Basketball squad had its season end on Wednesday night with a 83-75 loss on the road in the ECAC Metro Tournament at second seeded Staten Island, N.Y. Freshman
Brittany Carroll (Staten Island, N.Y.) led three players in double-figures with a game and career-high 27 points.
Wednesday's game saw the lead change just twice, once in the opening minute of play and again when Staten Island took the lead for good on a Melanie Johnson three-point field goal at the midway point of the second half.
Mount Saint Vincent got off to a fast start in the game, pulling out to a 10-4 advantage on a
Kelly Fraser (Staten Island, N.Y.) conversion with 14:03 left before halftime. Staten Island would get to within a point four times in the middle stages of the half, but could not pull even with the Mount.
Following an Alyssa Carlsen lay-in with 9:34 left before the break cut the Mount Saint Vincent lead to 18-17, the Dolphins put together an 18-3 run covering nearly six minutes. Carroll started the run for the Mount with a three-pointer to push the Dolphins in front 21-17 and then capped the spurt with another triple to spread the Mount Saint Vincent lead to 36-20 with just under four minutes left before halftime. Carroll scored 11 of the Dolphins' 18 points in the run and the Mount went 7-for-11 from the floor and a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point distance.
Mount Saint Vincent would not allow its advantage under 11 points the remainder of the first half and used a pair of free-throws from Carroll and a conversion from the charity stripe from
Daniela Arias (Woodside, N.Y.) with no time of the clock to carry a 47-30 lead into the intermission.
Mount Saint Vincent shot just shy of 47-percent in the first half on Wednesday and knocked down five three-point field goals. The Mount outscored Staten Island 18-8 in the paint, 12-5 in points off of turnovers and 12-9 at the free-throw line to build the advantage. Carroll led all scorers with 17 first half points, while Megan Myhre netted 12 points for Staten Island.
Mount Saint Vincent would hand on to the lead until the middle of the second half, but was to just one field goal until a Carroll three-pointer at the 13:18 mark of the period pushed the Mount's lead to 52-43. Staten Island would take advantage of the scoring drought by outscoring the Dolphins 11-0 between field goals to slash its halftime deficit to 49-43 on a Johnson conversion with 14:22 left.
The Dolphins would cling to the lead until the 10:03 mark of the second half when Johnson canned a three-pointer to give Staten Island the lead for good at 55-54. Over the first 11:08 of the second stanza, Staten Island outscored the Mount 29-7, forcing eight turnovers and holding the Mount to 3-for-17 shooting.
Mount Saint Vincent would get as close as three points twice following a Johnson conversion that gave Staten Island a 59-54 lead with 8:52 left in regulation, but would not be able to get any closer the rest of the night. Victoria Gallinaro hit a pair of free-throws to give Staten Island a 72-63 lead with 3:38 left to play and the second seeded Dolphins would match the game-high advantage twice in the final 2:06 before taking the final eight point decision.
Staten Island scored 53 points in the second half after shooting 47.1-percent from the floor and just shy of 90-percent from the free-throw line. Staten Island outscored Mount Saint Vincent 17-5 at the free-throw line in the second period and 13-6 off of turnovers. Three Staten Island players scored in double-figures after the break, led by 15 points from Johnson.
The Mount shot under 30-percent overall in the second half and turned the ball over 12 times. Carroll scored 10 points after the break and was one of just five Mount Saint Vincent players to find the scoring column after halftime.
Carroll finished the game 9-for-21 overall from the field and 5-for-11 from three-point range. Wednesday was the fourth time Carroll has scored at least 20 points in a game this season and she added four rebounds and a team-high four steals in the contest.
Theresa Carey (Hampton Bays, N.Y.) netted 14 points for the Mount after going 4-for-12 from the floor and 5-for-6 from the free-throw line and hauled in a career-high eight rebounds and handed out three assists. Fraser finished with 11 points and four blocks for the Mount and
Christina Barone (Staten Island, N.Y.) chipped in with eight points and a game-high eight assists.
Andrea Sinaly (Middle Village, N.Y.) led the Dolphins with 10 rebounds and added three points.
Myhre paced Staten Island with 25 points on 9-for-15 shooting and Johnson totaled 24 points and a game-high five steals. Nikki Fabozzi recorded a double-double with 15 points and a game-high 17 rebounds and Gallinaro posted 11 points on the strength of a 7-for-7 effort from the free-throw line. Carlsen rounded out the night with nine boards and five blocked shots for Staten Island.
Both teams shot under 40-percent from the floor on Wednesday, but Staten Island outscored the Mount 26-17 at the free-throw line in the contest. Staten Island finished the night with a 19-9 edge in fast break points and turned 17 offensive rebounds into 13 second chance points.
Wednesday's loss closes Mount Saint Vincent's season with an 18-10 overall record.
