Riverdale, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Volleyball team went 2-1 in three non-conference matches on Saturday, posting 3-0 wins over Cazenovia and Medgar Evers by scores of 25-11, 25-13, 25-13 and 25-10, 25-14, 25-14 and dropping a five set heartbreaker to SUNYIT by a score of 25-23, 22-25, 26-24, 23-25 and 10-15. Jacob Johnson (Henderson, Nev.) had a big day for the Mount, totaling 41 kills in the three contests.
Mount Saint Vincent opened the day hitting .377 against Cazenovia on its way to its 10
th victory of the season. The Dolphins put away 31 kills in the match compared to just 10 for the Wildcats, with Johnson posting 11 winners. He hit .409 in the contest for the Mount to go along with a pair of digs.
Tyler Cucullu (Henderson, Nev.) added six kills for the Dolphins and totaled half of the team's four service aces. He closed out a solid all-around match with four digs and three total blocks.
Brett Holiday (Stratford, N.J.) added five kills for the Dolphins and four digs.
Junior
James DiGiovanni (Bay Shore, N.Y.) handed out 26 assists to lead all players in the match and added two aces.
T.J. Barczik (Lake Grove, N.Y.) lifted a match-high 12 digs and
Timothy Kolodny (Woodland Hills, Calif.) contributed eight digs and three kills to the win.
After sweeping Cazenovia to open play on Saturday, the Mount locked into a tightly contested match with SUNYIT. The first four sets of the match were decided by three points or fewer before SUNYIT took the deciding set by five points to earn the hard fought victory.
Johnson led all players in the match with 18 kills and hit an efficient .357 for the Dolphins. He totaled two aces in the contest and lifted seven digs. Cucullu continued his strong play with 10 more kills and three aces. He closed the match with four digs and a pair of blocks.
Holiday chipped in with eight kills for Mount Saint Vincent in the contest and three blocks. DiGiovanni handed out 36 assists for Mount Saint Vincent and Barczik led the team with eight digs. Kolodny wrapped up the match with four winners and four blocks for the Mount.
SUNYIT was paced by 12 kills, five blocks and seven digs from Matthew Cardot and got 10 winners, three aces and four blocks from Evan Smith. Jeff Knapp totaled 36 assists and Justin Rich was one of three players to post seven digs for the visitors.
For the match, SUNYIT put away 46 kills as a team to 45 for the Dolphins, while service aces were even at nine apiece. Total team blocks in the match went in favor of the Dolphins by a count of 11.5-10.0.
The Dolphins closed out play on Saturday with their second win of the day and 11
th triumph of the season. The Mount hit a blistering .556 as a team against Medgar Evers, committing just 2 attack errors in 45 attempts. Johnson led the charge with 11 kills and a .647 hitting percentage and added six digs against the Cougars.
Holiday and Kolodny each put down four kills for Mount Saint Vincent in the win, with Kolodny adding five digs. Cucullu handed out 18 assists in the match and Barczik posted a match-high with 14 digs
Mount Saint Vincent closed out the contest with a 27-16 advantage in kills, while Medgar Evers took a 5-3 edge in aces and a 5-2 advantage in total team blocks.
Following Saturday's results, Mount Saint Vincent stands at 11-7 overall on the season. The Dolphins will return to Skyline Conference play on March 27 when they travel to league rival Ramapo. Match time with the Roadrunners is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
