Fraser Nets Overtime Winner At Maritime

Throggs Neck, N.Y. – Freshman Ardiana Mehmetaj (North Salem, N.Y.) scored with 1:22 left in regulation to tie the score and Kelly Fraser (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored her third goal of the day three minutes into overtime to send the College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Lacrosse team to a 6-5 win at Maritime on Saturday in its Skyline Conference opener.
 
Fraser got the scoring started on Saturday just under three minutes into the game with an unassisted marker at the 27:09 mark for an early 1-0 lead.
 
Maritime would answer with two straight goals to take its first lead of the day when Tina Kang and Savannah Hardwick tallied just under a minute part. The back-to-back goals would be the only time either team scored consecutive goals until the Dolphins scored three straight to over the final five minutes of regulation and in overtime.
 
After the Hardwick goal at the 24:21 mark of the first half, the two teams would alternate goals the rest of the half. Jane Quinn scored for the Privateers to close the scoring in the period with 45 second left before the intermission to give Maritime a 4-3 lead at the break. Melina Mezzanotte (Shirley, N.Y.) and Laura Carr (Franklin Square, N.Y.) scored for the Dolphins over the last 22 minutes of play before the half.
 
Leanna Lavelle spread Maritime's lead to 5-3 with 19:19 left to play in regulation. The two goal lead would stand until Fraser scored with 5:03 remaining for her second tally of the game. Mehmetaj got the Mount even in the last two minutes with her first career goal, setting up Fraser's game winner in the extra frame.
 
In three games played this season, Fraser has amassed a team-high nine points after scoring six goals and assisting on three other goals. Saturday's overtime goal is her first game winning marker of the season. Fraser added two groundballs and two caused turnovers in the game for the Mount.
 
Jessica McAllister (Floral Park, N.Y.) picked up a team-high six groundballs and also caused three turnovers for the Dolphins. Samantha Ramsden (Warren, R.I.) led the Mount with five draw controls and added five groundballs, while Colleen Walsh (Manchester, Vt.) caused three turnovers and picked up four groundballs. Carr won two draw controls and collected five groundballs to go along with her goal.
 
Kacie McCormack (Mahopac, N.Y.) earned the win in goal for the Dolphins after making 11 saves, including six in the second half and one in overtime. Meghin Paczkowski stopped 19 shots for Maritime in the game and collected three groundballs.
 
For the game, Mount Saint Vincent outshot Maritime 34-16 overall and 25-16 in shots on target. The Dolphins held a 37-28 edge in groundballs and won eight of the 14 draw controls in the game. The Dolphins scored a pair of free-position shots and held Maritime to 0-for-6 in free-position chances.
 
Mount Saint Vincent's win evens its overall record at 2-2 and moves it to 1-0 in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins will be back in action again on March 26 when they travel to King's (Pa.) for a non-conference contest. Opening Draw in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
