Women’s Lacrosse Handed Season Opening Loss At Stevens

Hoboken, N.J. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Lacrosse team suffered a 19-1 loss on the road at Stevens on Monday evening in its 2014 season opener. Junior Melina Mezzanotte (Shirley, N.Y.) scored the Dolphins' only goal in the game, while classmate Kacie McCormack (Mahopac, N.Y.) stopped 11 shots.
 
Stevens opened the scoring just 12 seconds into the game when Kara Rafferty scored her first of three goals in the game. The Ducks scored 11 straight times to start the game before Mezzanotte got Mount Saint Vincent on the board. She finishes off an unassisted tally with 6:21 left before halftime to stop the scoring run for Stevens.
 
The Ducks outshot the Dolphins 27-5 in the opening period, including a 19-3 edge in shots on goal. Stevens picked up 14 of the 20 groundballs in the half and it held the Mount to 4-for-8 in clearing attempts.
 
Stevens added eight more goals in the second half on Monday, getting back on the board just over a minute into the second stanza. The Ducks scored three times in the first 7:36 of the half and then added three more goals in a four minute stretch in the middle stages of the half.
 
Eight different players finished the game with a goal for the Ducks and six players scored at least two goals in the game. Mariel Haubrich scored four goals and Caitlyn Hughes, Rafferty and Erika Wilcox scored three goals each. Hughes led the team with three groundballs and Kathleen Kalbian caused three turnovers. Wilcox won a game-high five draw controls for Stevens.
 
Mezzanotte scored the 22nd goal of her career for the Dolphins and picked up a groundball in the game. Colleen Walsh (Manchester, Vt.) led the team with two groundballs and two caused turnovers, with Jessica McAllister (Floral Park, N.Y.) and Laura Carr (Franklin Square, N.Y.) each winning two draw controls.
 
McCormack made at least 10 saves in a game for the 10th time in her career on Monday and added a groundball for Mount Saint Vincent. Stevens used a trio of goalies in the game with Sarah Prall earning the win with two first half stops.
 
Stevens outshot Mount Saint Vincent 42-5 overall and 30-3 in shots on goal Monday evening. The Ducks also held a 23-9 edge in groundballs and a 16-5 advantage in draw controls. Stevens went a perfect 6-for-6 in clears in the game, while Mount Saint Vincent went 5-for-11.
 
At 0-1 overall on the season, Mount Saint Vincent will open a five game home stand on March 1 when they host Scranton. Opening Draw is set for 6:00 p.m. at Maritime.
