Mount Saint Vincent Pulls Away From Mount Saint Mary

Newburgh, N.Y. – After dropping 23 straight games to Mount Saint Mary, the College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Basketball team picked up its second straight victory over the Knights on Wednesday night with a 73-51 road win. Freshman Brittany Carroll (Staten Island, N.Y.) led three players in double-figures with 14 points and Kelly Fraser (Staten Island, N.Y.) posted her 13th straight double-double.
 
Carroll got Mount Saint Vincent out to an early 9-2 lead when she canned a triple with 17:36 to play in the first half. A Fraser three-pointer at the 14:35 gave the Dolphins a 16-7 lead, but an 18-7 spurt from the Knights covering over nine minutes gave them their first lead of the game at 25-23. Natalie Candarelli's three-pointer capped the run with just over five minutes to play before halftime.
 
Mount Saint Vincent would grab the lead back on three straight free-throws, but went a stretch of over five minutes without a field goal, allowing the Knights to move back in front 29-27 on a Rachel Perrone jumper with 1:09 remaining in the half.
 
Christina Barone (Staten Island, N.Y.) ended the drought for the Dolphins with a three-pointer in the final minute to push the Mount in front 30-29 and Daniela Arias (Woodside, N.Y.) sent the Dolphins into the locker room with a 32-29 lead with a bucket in the final 32 seconds of the opening period.
 
Fraser reached double-figures in points and rebounds before halftime for the Mount, netting 11 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Fraser went 4-for-10 from the floor, but 6-for-7 from the free-throw line to get into double-figures. Carroll hit half of the team's four three-pointers in the first half on her way to eight points before the break.
 
The Dolphins scored the first seven points of the second half to move in front 39-29 on a Fraser conversion 1:05 into the frame. The bucket was part of a 27-7 run for Mount Saint Vincent over the first 9:30 of the second half. Brittany Lee (Newton, N.J.) led seven different scorers over the run with seven points, while Theresa Carey (Hampton Bays, N.Y.) tallied six points for the Dolphins.

Following a Barone bucket that gave the Dolphins a 57-36 lead, the Mount did not let their lead fall below 20 points the rest of the night. Mount Saint Vincent led by as many as 27 points on three occasions in the final eight minutes, with the final time coming on a Jessica Sepp (Bronx, N.Y.) free-throw with 4:15 left to play.
 
Mount Saint Vincent scored 41 points after halftime and shot better than 41-percent from the floor in pulling away from the Knights. The Dolphins finished 25-for-67 from the floor and hit seven threes on the night.
 
Carroll went 4-for-7 from behind the arc in the game on her way to the team-high 14 points and added an assist and two steals. Lee wrapped up a strong night with 10 points, seven rebounds and four steals for the Mount.
 
Fraser scored just two points after halftime, but finished with 13 points and a game-high 14 rebounds for her 17th double-double of the season. Barone closed out a strong game for Mount Saint Vincent with eight points, four rebounds, three steals and seven assists.
 
The Dolphins held Mont Saint Mary to 32.1-percent shooting and forced 27 turnovers that led to 27 points. Mount Saint Vincent also held a 28-12 edge in paint points and a 22-4 advantage in bench scoring. Rachel Perrone led all scorers with 21 points for the Knights.
 
Following Wednesday's win, Mount Saint Vincent improves to 16-6 overall and to 8-3 in conference play. The Dolphins will return to the Peter Jay Sharp Center on Saturday when they close out the home schedule against St. Joseph's-L.I. on Senior Day. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
