Newburgh, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Soccer team lost its third straight game on Thursday night following a 2-1 road loss at league rival Mount Saint Mary. Freshman forward
Dennis Reyes (Waldwick, N.J.) scored the lone goal for the Dolphins, his 16
th of the season.
Mount Saint Mary would score early in the first half on Thursday and late in the second half to secure its fifth straight victory. Matt Minniter scored both goals for the Knights, tallying his fourth of the year in the third minute and the game winning goal with 1:11 left in regulation. Michael Ennis assisted on the first score and Chris Marchese helped on the game winner.
In a tightly contested first half, Mount Saint Mary held a 7-6 advantage in shots and took all five corner kicks in the period. Both
David Melchor (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Austin Peluso made three saves in the opening 45 minutes of the game.
The Dolphins would get on the board and tie the score at 1-1at the 68:08 mark of the contest when Reyes potted his team leading 16
th goal of the season. He carried the ball into the box and beat the Mount Saint Mary keeper to bring the Mount even in the game.
Mount Saint Vincent would stay even in the game until the 89
th minute when Minniter picked up first game winning goal of the season.
Reyes scored for the Dolphins for the first time since scoring four times in a 10-1 league win against Sarah Lawrence on September 27. Sophomore
Kevin Jardines (South Gate, Calif.) finished the night with three shots for the Mount, while
Jaime Salazar (Long Beach, Calif.) led the team with four attempts.
Melchor rounded out the game for Mount Saint Vincent with six saves in the game after making three more stops after halftime. Over the last three games, Melchor has made 22 saves for the Mount. Peluso made four stops for the Knights in the win.
Mount Saint Mary finished the night with a 14-10 edge in overall shots and an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal. The Knights took all eight corner kicks in the game, while fouls were called 19-16 against Mount Saint Mary.
Thursday's loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 5-8 overall on the season and to 2-3 in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins will look to snap their three game slide on Saturday when they play host to preseason favorite Purchase on Saturday afternoon. Kick-off at the Athletic Field at Marillac is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
