Riverdale, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Soccer team will make its first ever appearance in the Skyline Conference Tournament on Sunday afternoon when it welcomes fifth seeded St. Joseph's-L.I. to the Athletic Field at Marillac. At A Glance: Mount Saint Vincent will enter play on Saturday at 9-9 overall, with five wins coming against league opponents in 2014. The Dolphins have won four of their last five outings overall, including a hard fought 2-1 win over Purchase on Wednesday to clinch a berth in the conference tournament.
Pablo Tellez (El Monte, Calif.) netted the game winner for the Dolphins 63:01 into the contest.
Freshman
Dennis Reyes (Waldwick, N.J.) leads the Dolphins through the first 18 game of the season with 21 goals and 47 points, both single season program records at Mount Saint Vincent. He has scored four game winning goals as a rookie and has scored at least two goals in a game six times. He leads the conference in goals and points heading into the weekend.
2013 Skyline Conference Rookie of the Year
Kevin Jardines (South Gate, Calif.) has produced 19 points on seven goals and five assists as a sophomore and a pair of freshmen round out a quartet of players with at least 13 points on the season.
Jaime Salazar (Long Beach, Calif.) has scored five times, including two game winners, and assisted on five other goals and
Andrew Gomez (Sun City, Calif.) has picked up five assists and scored four times for the Mount.
Sophomore
David Melchor (Los Angles, Calif.) saw the bulk of action in goal during the regular season for the Dolphins in 2014. He played 1,429 of a possible 1,630 minutes in goal, posting eight wins and 86 saves. Entering play on Saturday he holds a .711 save percentage and a 2.20 goals against average.
Head Coach: In his second season at the helm of the Dolphins, Head Coach
Nate Kalin has guided the Dolphins to a 21-14-2 overall record and a 7-9-2 mark in league contests. His team recorded a single season mark for wins in 2013 and this season has mentored the Mount to its first appearance in the conference tournament.
After taking over a program that won just eight game the previous four years prior to his arrival, Kalin has got the Dolphins into the top-four in the league standings in 2014 and has mentored the 2013 Skyline Conference Rookie of the Year and a NSCAA/Continental Tire Third Team All-East Region, the first such honors in the program's history.
A Look At St. Joseph's-L.I. – The Golden Eagles will make their second trip to the College of Mount Saint Vincent in 2014 and hold a 8-12 overall record. St. Joseph's also won four of its last five regular season games to secure the fifth seed in the league tournament, with the lone blemish in the stretch coming at the hands of the Dolphins on October 18.
The Golden Eagles have five players tied for the team lead in goals scored with Chris Hall, Cody Kull, Brian O'Sullivan, Chance Casey and Alex Guadagno all finding the back of the net three times during the regular season. Hall leads the team with 11 points, adding five assists to his three goals.
Avery Gomez has the majority of playing time in goal for St. Joseph's, playing 1,434:43 heading into Saturday's tilt. He has made 106 saves in 17 games played and holds a 1.32 goals against average and a .835 save percentage.
2014 Match-Up – The teams played a spirited game on October 18 in Riverdale, with the Dolphins coming away with a hard fought 2-1 win on Homecoming Weekend.
Kevin Jardines opened the scoring for the Dolphins in the sixth minute and
Jaime Salazar picked up the game winner off a pass from Jardines in the 83
rd minute for the Dolphins. Cody Kull scored his third goal of the season for the visitors late in the first half.
Avery Gomez made seven saves in the game for St. Joseph's, while
David Melchor picked up the win for the Mount with four stops. Mount Saint Vincent finished the game with a 15-14 edge in shots and a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The Series – Since the start of the 2004 four season, Mount Saint Vincent is 2-6-2 against the Golden Eagles, including a 1-2-2 mark in the last five outings. Over that 10 game stretch, the Golden Eagles have outscored the Mount 43-8.
Community Service – Prior to both soccer games on campus on Saturday and the Women's Volleyball game, the College of Mount Saint Vincent will sponsor a clothing drive in conjunction with the Skyline Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. All donations will be given to My Sisters Place in White Plains, N.Y. to help support victims of Domestic Violence. Donation boxes will be set up at the Athletic Field at Marillac and the Peter Jay Sharp Center lobby.
Skyline Conference Tournament: In addition to the Dolphins and Golden Eagles, Purchase will head to Maritime in the other quarterfinal contest on Saturday. The winner of the Mount Saint Vincent tilt will head to top seed Mount Saint Mary on Wednesday, while the winner of the Purchase and Maritime contest will head to Sage. The winners of the semifinals will square off in the title match at Purchase College on November 8 as part of the 2014 Skyline Conference Fall Festival.
