Dolphins Handed First Skyline Loss At Old Westbury

Old Westbury, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Basketball squad dropped its first league contest of the season on Saturday afternoon with an 83-71 loss on the road at Old Westbury. Freshman Brittany Lee (Newton, N.J.) recorded her first career double-double, including a career-high 17 points.
 
Mount Saint Vincent gained its first lead of the game at the 13:25 mark of the opening stanza when Theresa Carey (Hampton Bays, N.Y.) converted a lay-in to get the Dolphins in front 7-6. After falling behind by a point on a pair of free-throws from Olivia Irardi, the Mount climbed back in front 13-10 on a pair of Lee free-throws and a bucket from Brooke West (Hamilton, N.J.) with 10:55 left in the first period.
 
Following the West conversion, the half would feature five ties and five lead changes before Old Westbury grabbed the lead for good in the period on a Raven Pentz triple with 4:13 left before halftime. The bucket started a 15-6 run that saw Old Westbury take a 37-29 lead into the intermission.
 
Old Westbury built its lead in the first half by forcing 10 Mount Saint Vincent turnovers and turning those into 12 points. The Panthers also posted a 20-8 edge in paint points in the opening 20 minutes. Jasmine Robinson led all scorers for Old Westbury with 14 points in the period.
 
Mount Saint Vincent finished the first half 8-for-38 from the floor and 4-for-15 from three-point range. Brittany Carroll (Staten Island, N.Y.) was the lone Dolphin in double-figures with 11 points, while Lee and Kelly Fraser (Staten Island, N.Y.) each grabbed five rebounds.
 
The Dolphins would whittle the Old Westbury lead down to one point with a 14-7 spurt over the first 4:20 of the second half. Lee recorded seven points over the run and Carroll capped the spurt with a three-pointer to get the Dolphins to within 44-43.
 
Old Westbury, who never trailed in the second half, answered with a three-point play from DeAndrea Scott and later used a Jasmine Robinson bucket to expand its lead to 10 points, at 73-63, on a fast break bucket with 2:38 left in regulation. The lead grew to a game-high 15 points on two Clarissa Gallagher free-throws with just over a minute to play in the game.
 
The Dolphins allowed Old Westbury to shot 44.1-percent after halftime and were outscored 14-5 from the free-throw line. Overall, the Panthers just under 40-percent for the game, but recorded 44 points in the paint and turned 27 Mount Saint Vincent turnovers 31 points.
 
Scott scored 19 points after halftime for the Panthers on her way to a game-high 32 points on 11-for-18 shooting overall. A solid all-around effort was closed out with 12 rebounds, three assists, four blocks and a pair of steals. Jasmine added 26 points for Old Westbury to go along with five steals and Pentz tallied 14 points and handed out three assists.
 
Lee continued her steady play for the Dolphins with a career-high point total on 5-for-11 shooting, including two threes, and a perfect 5-for-5 effort from the free-throw line. She posted double-figures in rebounds for the second straight game with 11 and added three assists and two steals.
 
Carroll knocked in four triples on her way to 16 points to go along with three assists and Carey finished up with 12 points. Fraser wrapped up the game with a game-high 14 rebounds and also chipped in with nine points and a block.
 
Saturday's loss is the third in the last four outings for Mount Saint Vincent and drops it to 6-3 overall and to 1-1 in league play. Next up for the Dolphins is a home league tilt with Mount Saint Mary on Wednesday. Tip-off with the Knights is set for 5:30 p.m.
