Riverdale, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Soccer team was dealt its first loss of the season on Saturday evening after falling to visiting Sage in a hard fought 1-0 decision. Freshman goalkeeper
David Melchor (Los Angeles, Calif.) finished the night with seven saves for the Mount.
Â
The two teams battled through a scoreless first half with Sage holding a slim 8-6 edge in shots after 45 minutes. The Gators hit a post in the opening stanza and had a goal waived off on offside. Both goalkeepers were sharp in the opening frame, with Melchor stopping four shots and Tim Madden from Sage making three saves.
Â
The Dolphins came out of halftime and outshot the Gators 4-1 in the first 10 minutes, but could not solve Madden. He made a save from inside the box on
Victor Ramirez (Los Angeles, Calif.) to keep the game scoreless at the 51:44 mark of the contest.
Â
Sage would convert the only goal of the game just under seven minutes later after a penalty kick was awarded. Gustavo Trinidad buried his fifth goal of the season at 58:36 for the only marker of the contest.
Â
Ramirez led the Dolphins in shots on the night with four overall and two on goal, while
Kevin Jardines (South Gate, Calif.) finished with three attempts for the Dolphins.
Â
The game was tightly contested throughout, with Sage holding a slim 15-13 advantage in shots overall and an 8-6 edge in shots on goal. Corner kicks went 3-2 in favor of the Mount and fouls on the night were whistled 17-14 against the visitors. Sage finished with 10 different players with a shot.
Â
Melchor rounded out the night with seven stops for the Dolphins, just one shy of his season-high of eight in the season opener. Madden earned the win for Sage after stopping six shots.
Â
The loss on Saturday is the first for the Mount this season and snaps a nine game winning streak. The blemish drops the Dolphins to 9-1 overall and to 0-1 in Skyline Conference play. Next up for the Mount is a home date with Mount Saint Mary on October 1. Kick-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Purchase College.Â
