Samaan, Jardines tally in victory

Box Score
New York, N.Y. – Sophomore Matthew Samaan (Manalapan, N.J.) scored late in regulation to bring the College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Soccer team even with John Jay and Kevin Jardines (South Gate, Calif.) scored in overtime to send the Dolphins to a 2-1 road overtime victory on Monday evening. The win is the eighth straight for the Mount to open the season.

The Dolphins fell behind early in Monday's contest when John Jay's Besian Shala scored on a breakaway to move the Bloodhounds in front 1-0 in the second minute. The one goal deficit marked the first time the Mount has trailed in a game this season.

Mount Saint Vincent would be held off the board in the first half on Monday and would not get the equalizer until the 87th minute. Trailing by one goal, Samaan took a pass from freshman Victor Ramirez (Los Angeles, Calif.) inside the box and buried his fifth goal of the season to even the game at one goal apiece.

The two teams would remain deadlocked until the final minute of the first overtime period when Jardines scored his second overtime winner of the season. Jorge Chavez (West Covina, Calif.) fed a ball the bounded over the keeper and Jardines collected the pass and converted the game winning tally.

"Mentally, we were not sharp and physically we were very sluggish.  But, to the players' credit, they persevered and showed great determination to get the equalizer.  The character of this team is unquestionable - they played for something bigger than any individual tonight," stated head coach Nate Kalin following the team's eighth straight triumph.

The game winning goal was Jardines fourth deciding tally of the season and he now sits second on the team in points with 14 and goals with six. Samaan is one of four Dolphins with at least 10 points on the season with 12 and Ramirez leads the Dolphins with 16 points.

David Melchor, who earned a Skyline Conference weekly award for the third time this season earlier on Monday, picked up the win and moves his record to 8-0. He made four saves in the contest, including three in the first half to keep the game at a one goal deficit. John Jay used a pair of keepers, with Andrew Berman playing 54 minutes and making seven stops.

Mount Saint Vincent finished the game with an 18-6 advantage in shots on Monday and an 8-4 edge in corner kicks. Fouls in the contest were whistled 15-8 against the Bloodhounds.

Mount Saint Vincent improved its overall record to 8-0 overall with the win and to 2-0 in games decided in overtime. The Dolphins will look to extend their winning streak on Wednesday night when they play host to St. Joseph's-Brooklyn. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Tibbetts Brook Park.
