Dolphins Drop Final Non-Conference Contest Of The Season To Berkeley

Riverdale, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Basketball team suffered its fourth consecutive loss on Wednesday evening with a 56-44 non-conference defeat to Berkeley (N.Y.). Sophomore Kelly Fraser (Staten Island, N.Y.) paced the Dolphins with her fifth double-double of the season.
 
Mount Saint Vincent pulled in front 9-5 in the first five minutes after back-to-back buckets from Andrea Sinaly (Middle Village, N.Y.) and Fraser broke a 5-5 tie.  The Dolphins would match their largest lead of the period on a Jessica Sepp (Bronx, N.Y.) basket at the 12:18 mark before going nearly 10 minutes before scoring again.
 
The Knights took advantage with an 8-0 run capped by a Milan Germany bucket and would hold the lead until Sinaly deadlocked things at 18-18 at the 1:22 mark. The team's would trade free-throws over the final 1:02 of the opening stanza and went to the intermission tied at 19-19.
 
Berkeley was held to 17.6-percent shooting in the half but scored 10 of its 19 points off of 17 Mount Saint Vincent turnovers. The Knights also hauled in 12 offensive rebounds before the break and scored 12 second chance points.
 
The Dolphins shot just shy of 31-percent from the floor, with Fraser leading all scorers after 20 minutes of play with eight points. Fraser and Sinaly combined for 14 of the team's 25 rebounds in the first half.
 
The Dolphins opened the second stanza with 12 of the first 18 points scored to take their largest lead of the night, 31-25, with 16:28 left in regulation. An Aiyesha Brown three-pointer at the 13:52 mark started a 15-4 run for the Knights that saw them pull in front 40-35 at the midway point of the second period.
 
A Sinead Gooney (Bronx, N.Y.) three-point play would pull the Dolphins back to within a point with 7:57 left to play and a Tanisha Montague (Brooklyn, N.Y.) lay-in in transition would tie the score at 44-44 with 6:15 showing on the clock.
 
Mount Saint Vincent would not score again after the Montague conversion, with Berkeley closing on a 12-0 to earn the road victory. Rachel Thomas gave the Knights the lead for good at the 5:47 mark and Janay Thomas capped the scoring with 19 seconds left to give the visitors the final 12 point advantage.
 
Brown led the way for Berkeley with a game-high 25 points after shooting 8-for-23 overall and a perfect 7-for-7 from the free-throw line. Germany added 13 points and team-highs in rebounds with 11 and blocks with two, while Thomas chipped in with 11 points and five rebounds.
 
Fraser was the only Dolphin to score in double-figures after posting 16 points on 7-for-14 shooting. She hauled in a game-high 14 rebounds and also blocked a shot for Mount Saint Vincent.
 
Sinaly scored six points for the Mount and added nine rebounds, with Gooney coming off the bench to add four points and six boards. Montague handed out a game-high five assists for the Dolphins and joined Sinaly with a pair of steals.
 
Mount Saint Vincent shot 34.5-percent from the floor overall and was held without a three-point field goal for the fifth time this season after going 0-for-7 from behind the arc.
 
Berkeley shot better then 42-percent from the floor after halftime on its way to finishing the night at 30.4-percent. The Knights also knocked in three triples after the intermission and finished 3-for-13 from behind the arc.
 
Although the visitors were outrebounded 51-41 overall, the Knights held a 17-12 edge on the offensive end and a 17-6 edge in second chance points. Berkeley also turned Mount Saint Vincent over 34 times and turned those into 34 points off of giveaways.
 
Wednesday's loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 6-16 overall on the season heading into the final three contests of the regular season. The Dolphins will be back on the floor again on Saturday when they welcome Mount Saint Mary. Tip-off with the Knights is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
