Kelly Fraser (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored a career-high 35 points and finished with her 11
th career double-double on Wednesday, but the College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Basketball team fell for the first time this season following a 104-90 loss to #20/24 Randolph-Macon at the 2013 Cruzin Classic. Fraser was one of three Dolphins in double-figures in the game.
Mount Saint Vincent opened on a strong note, scoring 10 of the first 14 points of the contest. Fraser scored six points over the spurt and classmate
Tanisha Montague (Brooklyn, N.Y.) gave the Mount it largest lead of the game with a lay-in to push it in front 10-4 with 14:41 left in the first half.
The Dolphins would maintain the lead until Kellie Cortina got Randolph-Macon its first lead of the game with a triple at the 14:19 mark. The three-point field goal was part of a 19-4 run for the Yellow Jackets that saw them jump to a 23-14 lead on a Katie Anderson free-throw with 9:32 left in the opening half.
Mount Saint Vincent would sneak back into the lead with an 11-1 spurt, capped by a
Nicole Oliver (Carmel, N.Y.) conversion with 2:19 left to play in the half. From there the game would be tied four times in the final 2:05 of the period, including on a three-point play from the Yellow Jackets' Lindsey Sharman to tie the score at 38-38 heading into halftime.
Both teams struggled from the field in the opening 20 minutes with the Dolphins converting 37.8-percent of their chances and Randolph-Macon shooting just 36.4-percent. Fraser led all scorers at the break with 20 points.
After both teams shot under 40-percent in the first half, the two squads combined for 118 points in the second half, with Randolph-Macon outscoring the Mount by 14. The Yellow Jackets knocked down four three-point field goals after the break and outscored the Mount 32-15 from the free-throw line.
Fraser gave the Dolphins a brief two point lead coming out of the break, but Randolph-Macon responded with a 13-5 spurt capped by a Hannah Livermon triple with 16:10 left to play to give it a 51-45 lead.
Six points would be the Yellow Jackets largest lead of the period until a Stephanie Staples lay-in at the 10:22 mark moved them in front by eight. Sharman would give Randolph-Macon its first double digit lead of the game with a conversion with just under nine minutes left.
Mount Saint Vincent would get its deficit down to four points twice in the final five minutes, but the Yellow Jackets converted eight free-throws in the final two minutes of the contest to secure their ninth win of the season.
Randolph-Macon shot just over 39-percent for the game, but canned seven triples and converted 43 of their 49 free-throws. Sarah Parsons led four in double-figures with a team-high 32 points on 10-for-19 shooting. Khajae Hester netted 24 points, going a perfect 16-for-16 from the stripe, to go along with a team-high six assists.
Fraser wrapped up the game 13-for-20 from the floor and also secured a game-high 11 rebounds. Fraser rounded out a strong all-around game with six blocks and a pair of assists.
Daniela Arias (Woodside, N.Y.) also recorded a career-high with 11 points.
Freshman
Brittany Carroll (Staten Island, N.Y.) went 4-for-9 from the floor on her way to 11 points, while
Christina Barone (Staten Island, N.Y.) handed out three assists and swiped three steals.
Mount Saint Vincent outscored Randolph-Macon 44-36 in the paint on Wednesday, but was bested by seven in points off turnovers and outscored 43-25 at the free-throw line. The Mount allowed 100 points in a game for the first time since allowing 101 on November 19, 2010 at Muhlenberg.
The loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 5-1 overall on the season. The Dolphins will return to play on Thursday afternoon at the Cruzin Classic against Emory and Henry. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
