Women’s Basketball Falls Short At Old Westbury

Old Westbury, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Basketball squad fell for the fifth time in six games on Tuesday night following a 64-46 road loss at Skyline Conference foe Old Westbury. Sophomore Kelly Fraser (Staten Island, N.Y.) was the lone Dolphin to score in double-figures, matching the game-high with 18 points.
 
After falling behind by as man as four points in the opening moments on Tuesday, the Dolphins used a 10-3 spurt to jump in front by six midway through the opening period. Fraser supported the run with a three-pointer and Nicole Oliver (Carmel, N.Y.) finished things with a pair of free-throws to push the Mount in front 18-12.
 
Mount Saint Vincent would maintain the lead until a pair of Clarissa Gallagher free-throws at the 6:35 mark pushed the Panthers back in front by a point. The Dolphins would rebound from a three-point deficit on a free-throw from Yen Pham (Queens, N.Y.) and lay-in from Shannon Koch (Kings Park, N.Y.) and would take the lead for good in the half on a Fraser free-throw with 4:28 on the clock.
 
The Dolphins held Old Westbury to two points over the final 5:43 of the period and outscored it 8-2 over that stretch to claim a 28-25 advantage at the break. Fraser scored 10 points for the Mount in the half on 4-for-7 shooting.
 
Coming out of the intermission, the Mount went the first 2:07 of the second half without scoring before a Fraser conversion. The Panthers used the brief drought to pull in front by three on a Raven Prentz triple at the 18:14 mark.
 
Desiree Rosa (Dumont, N.J.) got the Mount back even at 33-33 with a free-throw with 15:37 on the clock, before Old Westbury scored the next five points to take a 38-33 lead on a DeAndra Scott jumper with 13:40 left to play.
 
Old Westbury would not surrender the lead the rest of the night and used a 13-2 run from the Rosa free-throw to claim a 46-35 advantage with 10:15 to play.
 
The Dolphins would get the deficit down to eight points at the 6:27 mark on a pair of Fraser free-throws, but the Mount would score just four points over the final 6:27. The Panthers outscored the Mount 13-2 over the last four minutes to earn the league victory.
 
Mount Saint Vincent shot just under 21-percent from the floor in the second half as Old Westbury outscored it 39-18. The Panthers made seven more field goals then the Dolphins in the second half and three more triples.
 
Scott paced three Old Westbury players in double-figures with 18 points on 6-for-15 shooting overall and a 6-for-8 effort from the free-throw line. She also secured 10 rebounds and handed out three assists.
 
Antoinette Jolly contributed 12 points, eight boards, five assists and seven steals and Pentz tallied 10 points to go along with three helpers and four rebounds.
 
Fraser closed the night 6-for-15 from the floor and 5-for-6 from the free-throw line as she scored in double-figures for the 12th time this season. She just missed a double-double with nine rebounds and she matched her career-high with eight blocked shots.
 
Oliver came off the bench for the Dolphins to score seven points and block two shots and Tanisha Montague (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led all players with six assists to go along with four points and two steals. Andrea Sinaly (Middle Village, N.Y.) swiped a team-high four steals and added four points along with four rebounds.
 
Old Westbury finished the night with a 23-8 advantage in offensive rebounds and translated that into a 13-5 edge in second chance points. The Dolphins turned the ball over 29 times on Tuesday, leading to a 19-10 advantage for the Panthers in points off of miscues.
 
Following Tuesday's result, Mount Saint Vincent stands at 6-13 overall on the season and at 0-9 against league rivals. The Dolphins will search for their initial league win of the season on Thursday when they travel to Purchase. Opening tip with the Panthers is set for 8:00 p.m.
