Riverdale, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Basketball team remained winless in Skyline Conference play after a 78-59 loss at the hands of visiting Purchase on Wednesday evening.
Kelly Fraser (Staten Island, N.Y.) led the Dolphins with 13 points and
Tanisha Montague (Brooklyn, N.Y.) handed out five assists.
The first 4:30 on Wednesday featured four ties before the Dolphins jumped out to a four point lead, their largest of the contest, after back-to-back buckets from
Andrea Sinaly (Middle Village, N.Y.) and
Sinead Gooney (Bronx, N.Y.) with 14:34 left in the period.
The two teams would trade the lead three times over the next three-plus minutes, before Purchase put together a an 11-0 run covering nearly two minutes to take a 27-17 lead with just over 10 minutes left before the half. Jessica Biggs canned a triple and Jess Lindsay scored four points over that stretch for the Panthers.
Purchase would not surrender the lead again in the game and pushed out to a half-high 14 point lead with 2:41 on the first half clock following a Talia Beaulieu three-point field goal. The Mount would close the opening frame with seven of the final nine points, including a triple from
Desiree Rosa (Dumont, N.J.), to cut the deficit to nine points after 20 minutes of play.
Although the Dolphins shot 43.2-percent from the floor in the first half, they allowed five three-point field goals from the Panthers and were outscored from the free-throw line 14-3. Lindsay led all scorers at the break with 14 points for Purchase.
After falling behind by 13 points on a Lindsay conversion with 16:05 showing on the clock, Mount Saint Vincent battled back to get within six points after a quick 9-2 spurt. Fraser accounted for five points in the run for the Dolphins.
With the Dolphins as close as they would get the remainder of the night, Purchase spread the lead to a game-high 23 points after a 21-6 stretch covering 11:15. The Dolphins would score just 10 points over the final 13:39 of the tilt.
The Panthers finished the game with a balanced scoring attack and showed five different players in double-figures. Lindsay led the way with 22 points and 10 rebounds, while Bealieu added 14 points and matched the game-high with five assists. Lineker St. Hilaire led all players with five steals and added 12 points.
Fraser scored in double-figures for the ninth time this season after going 6-for-13 from the floor. She also blocked a pair of shots and added three rebounds. Montague contributed seven points to her assist total and secured two rebounds.
Sinaly rounded out a solid night with nine points, six rebounds and three assists, with Gooney chipping in with eight points.
Overall on the night, Purchase converted on 41.8-percent of its field goal chances, while the Dolphins shot 39.1-percent from the floor. The Mount finished 1-for-8 from behind the arc and misfired on 11 free-throw attempts. Purchase held the advantage in points off of turnovers after converting 28 Mount Saint Vincent miscues into 25 points.
The loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 5-9 overall on the season and to 0-6 in Skyline Conference play. Next up for the Dolphins is a trip to Farmingdale State on Saturday afternoon. Opening tip with the Rams is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
