Riverdale, N.Y. – Behind a career-high 29 points from sophomore
Kelly Fraser (Staten Island, N.Y.), the College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Basketball team snapped a four game losing streak on Monday night with a 54-52 victory over CCNY. Fraser finished the night with her third double-double of the season.
After racing out to a quick 8-0 lead over the first 2:31 of the game, the Mount went cold and scored just nine points the rest of the first half. CCNY used a 13-4 run covering nearly 11 minutes to take its first lead of the night on a Bria Fisher three-point play.
The Beavers jumped out to their largest lead of the game at the 4:01 mark of the first period on a Kendra Rivers conversion an then used a Rivers three-point field goal to erase a one point disadvantage in the final two minutes of the half.
Neither team scored over the final 2:02 of the opening stanza, with the Beavers taking a 19-17 edge into the locker room. The visitors shot 27.6-percent from the field and held the Mount to 19.4-percent shooting. Fraser led all scorers at the break with six points.
Mount Saint Vincent would not be able to regain the lead until a
Tanisha Montague (Brooklyn, N.Y.) jumper at the 15:11 mark of the second period before the two teams traded the lead over the next two possessions.
A Fraser conversion in the paint got the Mount out to a 30-27 lead and was part of an 8-0 spurt capped by another Fraser jumper with 12:47 to go. The sophomore accounted for six of the eight points in the run that carried the Dolphins to a 34-27 lead.
After a three-pointer from Joyce Li and free-throw from Rivers got CCNY back to within three points with 11:24 to play in regulation, the Mount ripped off six straight points to match its largest advantage of the night, at nine.
The Dolphins would not let their advantage fall to fewer then five points until a pair of free-throws from Sajidah Pressley got the Beavers to within four with 2:11 on the clock. Taylor Pomilio knocked down a jumper with 1:12 left to get CCNY to within two but went 1-for-2 from the free-throw line with a chance to tie with eight seconds left.
Mount Saint Vincent struggled from the free-throw line in the final two minutes, going 1-for-5. Fraser knocked in one of two with five seconds left to give the Dolphins a two point lead and then came away with a steal at the horn to secure the victory.
Fraser scored 23 of her game-high point total after halftime and finished the game 10-for-17 from the floor and 9-for-14 from the free-throw line. She also matched the game-high with 13 rebounds and led all players with four blocked shots.
Montague chipped in with eight points for the Mount, while
Andrea Sinaly (Middle Village, N.Y.) tallied six points, hauled in nine rebounds and swiped a game-high six steals.
Pompili paced the Beavers with 11 points, while Giovanna Blanco recorded a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Fisher also had a strong night with 10 points and 11 boards, while Rivers finished with five assists and six points.
Mount Saint Vincent shot better then 48-percent from the floor in the second half and finished the game shooting 32.3-percnt. The Dolphins closed the night shooting 54.5-percent from the free-throw line and failed to convert a three-point field goal for the second straight game and the third time this season.
The win pushes Mount Saint Vincent to 5-8 overall on the season. The Dolphins will return to Skyline Conference play on Wednesday when they play host to Purchase. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
