Joseph Rosado (Highland Falls, N.Y.) assisted on three goals as the Men's Soccer team outlasted Lehman on Wednesday afternoon 5-4 .
The high scoring affair was underway when freshman
Matthew Samaan (Manalapan, N.J.) converted a header off a centering pass from Rosado just under 10 minutes into the contest. It was Samaan's first of two on the afternoon, as he later gave the Mount a two goal advantage in the 24
th minute when he banged home a pass from classmate
William Gutelius at 23:07.
Mount Saint Vincent would hold on to the advantage until Lehman struck for a pair of goals in the middle stages of the first half. Maurice Whyte got the Lightning on the board when he struck a ball just outside the box home just two minutes after Samaan's second. The Lightning leveled the score at two on a Geovanny Arrendondo marker from nearly the same area. He collected a loose ball and drove in to the back of the net in the 32
nd minute.
Coming out of halftime on Wednesday, Lehman took a short lived lead when Oumar Niang carried a ball down the left wing and tucked a shot inside the near post just over three minutes after the half.
The Lightning lead lasted a total of 34 seconds, as Simon scored his first of three straight. He tied the score after converting a pass from Rosadao in the 49
th minute and then converted the game winner when Rosado and
Ahmed Ajao (Brooklyn, N.Y.) found him off a restart in the 60
th minute. Simon finished off his strong afternoon after out running the defense to a pass from Samaan and directing the ball inside the far post for a commanding 5-3 lead with just under 30 minutes to play.
Lehman would get back to within a goal when Momar Thiam pounded home a penalty kick at the 79:04 mark of the match, but Mount Saint Vincent held of the Lightning for its second triumph of the season.
After totaling just 19 points during the 2011 season, the Dolphins finished Wednesday's game with 16 points. Simon collected six on his three goals and Samaan finished with five after scoring twice and assisting on a third. In all, the Mount had five different players with at least one point in the game.
Overall in the contest, Lehman held the edge in shots 20-15, but Mount Saint Vincent finished the day with an 11-8 advantage in shots on goal. Corner kicks in the contest were even a four apiece, while fouls went 13-11 against the Dolphins.
The win sends Mount Saint Vincent to a 2-1-1 overall record on the season heading into conference play. The Dolphins will host Purchase on Saturday in their league opener with kick-off set for 8:00 p.m. at Tibbetts Brook Park.
