Yonkers, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Soccer team fell on Saturday afternoon to the City College of New York by a score of 5-2. Freshman
Matthew Samaan (Manalapan, N.Y.) and junior
Eric Lara (Pawtucket, R.I.) each scored their first career goals for the Dolphins.
CCNY got off to a fast start in the game when Samuel Nkama scored his first of the season just 25 seconds into the contest. Brian Mbamelu fed a pass across the goal mouth from the right side that Nkama deposited into the back of the net for an early 1-0 lead.
Following the early strike from the Beavers, the Mount had a sequence of chances before halftime but could not beat CCNY goalkeeper Danny Hernandez. The Mount held a 10-4 edge in shots in the opening 45 minutes but went to the intermission down 1-0.
Coming out of halftime, the Beavers got another quick score to open a two goal lead just under four minutes into the second half. Maximilian Mena curled a ball from the top left corner of the box off the right post for a 2-0 lead. The eventual game winner came on a Mount Saint Vincent own goal seven minutes later.
The Mount got on the board with their first goal of the season when junior
Ahmed Ajao (Brooklyn, N.Y.) fed Samaan just inside the penalty area. Samaan hammered a shot home under the bar to cut the deficit to 3-1 at the 68:50 mark of the match.
The Beavers went on to score two more goals inside the final 17 minutes to break the game open at 5-1. Nkama tallied his second of the game and Felipe Maidana each scored before Lara converted a penalty kick with just one second left.
Hernandez finished the game with five saves in earning the win, while Mount Saint Vincent keeper
Hector Morales made three stops.
Mount Saint Vincent finished the game outshooting CCNY 15-9, while the Beavers took 10 of the 15 corner kicks on the day. Fouls in the match were whistled 19-15 against CCNY on the day.
The loss on Saturday sends Mount Saint Vincent to 0-1 overall on the season. The Dolphins will be back in action again on Thursday when they host York. Kick-off at the College of Staten Island is slated for 5:30 p.m.
