Old Westbury, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Basketball team was dealt its third straight loss overall and its fourth consecutive league defeat on Wednesday after falling at Old Westbury by a score of 78-45. Freshman
Kelly Fraser (Staten Island, N.Y.) led the Mount with a game-high 18 points.
Mount Saint Vincent never led in the game and quickly fell behind by seven points, after the Panthers opened the game on a 7-0 run. Fraser got the Mount on the board with a free-throw at the 18:08 mark of the period, but Old Westbury later used a 13-1 run to open half-high 16 point lead.
After the Dolphins got to within 18-14 on an
Amy Delva (Nanuet, N.Y.) layup at the 9:21 mark, the Mount would score just four points the rest of the stanza and headed to the locker room trailing 31-18 after 20 minutes of action.
The Mount was held to just 17.6-percent shooting in the opening period after going 6-for-34 from the floor. Only four Dolphins scored in the first half, with Delva leading the way with six points.
Coming out of halftime, Old Westbury scored 17 of the first 23 points of the second stanza to jump in front 48-24 after a Kim Weathers conversion on the fast break at the 15:42 mark.
After the initial spurt of the second half, the Panthers would not lead by fewer then 20 points the remainder of the evening. The Dolphins later fell behind by a game-high 37 points in the final minute following another Weathers conversion.
Old Westbury would finish the game shooting just under 40-percent from the floor and featured four players with at least 10 points. Denise Zajonc led the team with 17 points, while Clarissa Gallagher netted 12.
Weathers and DeAndra Scott each recorded 10 points for the Panthers on Wednesday, while Deslyn Applewhaite hauled in a team-high 12 rebounds. Applewhaite and Gallagher each finished the game with four assists.
Mount Saint Vincent would never get on track in the game and finished the night shooting 23.1-percent after going 15-for-65 from the floor. The Mount also had a rough night from behind the arc, going just 2-for-11.
Fraser finished the evening with nearly half of the Dolphins' conversions from the field after going 7-for-14 overall. She also grabbed eight boards for the Mount. Delva was the only other Dolphin to net double-figures after posting 10 points to go along with six rebounds.
Senior
Kara McNish (Hawthorne, N.J.) finished the night with a game-high 16 rebounds and also led the team with four assists.
Andrea Sinaly (Middle Village, N.Y.) secured eight rebounds for the Mount and also blocked one of the team's two shots.
Old Westbury finished the night with big advantages in three major categories on Wednesday. The Panthers outscored the Dolphins in the paint 34-18, turned 27 Dolphin turnovers into 26 points and outscored the Mount on the fast break 14-0.
The loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 5-14 overall on the season and to 1-8 in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins will hit the hardwood again on Saturday when they travel to league front runner Farmingdale St. Tip-off with the Rams is slated for 1:00 p.m.
