Mount Saint Vincent Swept By Elmira To Close Play At New York State Challenge

New York, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Volleyball team rounded out play at the New York State Challenge on Saturday afternoon with a 14-25, 13-25 and 23-25 loss to Elmira. Freshman Ashleigh Scozzari (New Rochelle, N.Y.) led the Dolphins in the match with seven kills.
 
Elmira got off to a fast start in the match, scoring 14 of the first 18 points, including runs of 4-0 and 8-0. The Dolphins battled back to cut its deficit to 18-11 after an Erika Moncada (Yonkers, N.Y.) winner, but the Soaring Eagles finished with a 5-1 run to take the early one set lead.
 
The Dolphins were down early again in the second frame, scoring just two of the first 12 points. The Mount would not get closer then nine points in the set and scored as many as three straight points just once.
 
Mount Saint Vincent rallied to open the third set on Saturday afternoon and used an 8-0 spurt to pull in front 15-5. Scozzari totaled three kills over the run and Kristine DeMasi (Brooklyn, N.Y.) chipped in with a pair of service aces.
 
After building the 10 point advantage, the Mount allowed a 7-1 run to let the Soaring Eagles back to within four points at 16-12. The Dolphins would maintain the led after a Scozzari kill gave them a 20-16 advantage.
 
Leading by four, the Dolphins saw Elmira score nine of the final 12 points to sneak away with the victory in the third set and complete the sweep in the match.
 
Scozzari picked up seven of the team's 17 kills in the match and totaled two more blocks to lead the Dolphins. DeMasi added a pair of winners and also contributed two service aces and 10 digs.
 
Freshman Zana Daluz (Pawtucket, R.I.) put away a pair of kills and also handed out 11 assists. She recorded half of the team's six service aces. Carly Jenkinson (Pacifica, Calif.) continued her steady play on the back line for the Dolphins with 11 digs.
 
Elmira got 10 kills each from Taryn Rumsey and Sasha Zavadsha. Molly Short led all players with 22 assists, while Ashley Heiman collected five total blocks.
 
The loss to Elmira is Mount Saint Vincent's fourth straight and drops it to 11-16 overall on the season. The Dolphins will close out the regular season on Monday night when they play host to Medgar Evers. The Senior Night match is set for 7:00 p.m.
