Throggs Neck, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Volleyball team closed out the league schedule on Saturday by beating Maritime by scores of 25-13, 25-17 and 25-7 and then falling to St. Joseph's-L.I. by scores of 21-25, 15-25 and 13-25. Freshman
Ashleigh Scozzari (New Rochelle, N.Y.) finished the day with 18 kills and became the first Mount Saint Vincent player to record 200 kills in a season since 2007.
After trading the first eight points against Maritime in the opening set, the Mount used a 7-0 run to open a lead with would not relinquish. The Dolphins went on to score 12 of the next 15 points overall after breaking the tie and hit a blistering .423 in the opening set.
The Dolphins used another big run in set two on Saturday to break open a tightly contested stanza. Trailing 7-6 in the early going, the Dolphins ripped off the next eight points to pull in front 14-7. The Dolphins would build a lead as large as 10 points in the frame and held off a late Maritime rally to take a two set advantage.
Following a 3-0 spurt that brought Maritime to within 10-7 in the third set, Mount Saint Vincent closed the frame with the final 15 points to cruise to the victory. Junior
Morganne Booker (East Providence, R.I.) keyed the rally with three kills for the Dolphins.
Booker paced the Mount with 11 kills in the match and hit an impressive .500 for the Dolphins. Booker also added a pair of blocks and three of the team's 15 service aces. Scozzari rounded out the match with 10 winners.
Freshman
Zana Daluz (Pawtucket, R.I.) finished the contest with 18 assists for the Dolphins and
Carly Jenkinson (Pacifica, Calif.) lifted eight digs to go along with a career-high nine service aces.
Overall in the match, the Mount posted 29 kills to seven for Maritime and also led in aces 15-5. Total team blocks in the match were even at 2-2.
In the second match of the day, Mount Saint Vincent was swept in three sets by St. Joseph's-L.I. The Dolphins got off to a quick start against the Golden Eagles and jumped in front 11-7 after a four point push. The first set would continue to go back-and-forth, until St. Joseph's broke a 20-20 tie with five of the next six points to take a 1-0 lead.
The Golden Eagles tallied six of the first seven points in the second stanza and never let the Dolphins closer then three points in the frame. St. Joseph's put away 10 kills in the set and took advantage of eight Mount Saint Vincent attack errors.
Kristine DeMasi (Brooklyn, N.Y.) knotted the score at 11-11 in the third set with one of her three kills in the match, but the Dolphins could not hold off another late run by St. Joseph's. The Golden Eagles went on to score 14 of the final 17 points to secure the sweep and improve to 5-2 in league play.
Scozzari led the Dolphins with eight kills in the second match of the day and also totaled five blocks, including four solos. She now leads the Dolphins with 203 kills and became the first player to reach the 200 kills plateau since Meghan Flaherty '00 recorded 268 in 2007.
Daluz recorded her ninth double-double of the season after handing out a team-high 15 assists to go along with 16 digs. Jenkinson led the Dolphins with 17 digs, while Booker collected two more service aces.
The split on Saturday moves Mount Saint Vincent to 10-12 overall on the season and to 4-5 in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins will return to action again on October 23 when they travel to New Rochelle. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m.
