Newark, N.J. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Volleyball team fell in four sets on the road at Rutgers-Newark on Tuesday night by set scores of 15-25, 25-22, 12-25 and 9-25. Freshman
Ashleigh Scozzari (New Rochelle, N.Y.) paced the Mount with nine kills, while junior
Madeleine Garaicoa (Glendale, N.Y.) recorded a team-high 14 digs.
The Dolphins found themselves down 5-0 in the early going on Tuesday after the Scarlet Raiders took advantage of a pair of kills and three Mount Saint Vincent attack errors. The Dolphins would climb back to within 7-3 after a pair of Scozzari winners, but Rutgers-Newark used a 6-0 run to open a 13-4 advantage.
The Mount hit a combined -.143 in the opening frame, committing 12 errors, while the home standing Scarlet Raiders put away 12 kills and hit .222 as a unit to pull in front by a set in the match.
Mount Saint Vincent rallied in the second stanza to tie the match at 1-1. Trailing 11-8 after a Stephanie Touzan service ace, the Dolphins reeled off five straight points to pull in front 13-11. Freshman
Allison Regan (Carmel, N.Y.) led the charge with three straight service aces.
The 5-0 spurt was part of a 10-1 run for the Dolphins that put them in front 18-12 in the late stages of the set. The Scarlet Raiders would respond with a 10-3 run of their own to regain the lead, but Mount Saint Vincent used three Rutgers-Newarks miscues and a kill from Regan to hold of the charge.
In the third and fourth sets on Tuesday, the Dolphins combined for seven kills. Rutgers-Newark used an eight point run in the third set to open a commanding 15-2 lead and then a 9-0 spurt in the fourth to take a 20-6 advantage. Over the final two frames, Scarlet Raiders combined for 28 kills against just seven attack errors.
The Scarlet Raiders featured four players with at least 10 kills, led by 14 from Rachel Witt. She hit an impressive .458 on the night and also added four aces, nine digs and a pair of blocks.
Jen Mendoza was one of three players for Rutgers-Newark to post a double-double after handing out a match-high 42 assists to go along with 11 digs. Paulina Walega finished with 10 winners and 14 digs and Ula Nieznalska posted 10 kills and 12 digs.
Scozzarri finished the night with five digs and three total blocks to go along with her kill total, with
Morganne Booker (East Providence, R.I.) adding eight kills and a pair of digs.
Garaicoa was one of three Dolphins with at least 10 digs in the contest, joining
Erika Moncada (Bronx, N.Y.) who lifted 13 and
Zana Daluz (Pawtucket, R.I.) who finished with 10. Daluz finished the night with her fourth double-double of the season with 19 assists.
For the night, Rutgers-Newark finished with a total of 54 kills to 22 for Mount Saint Vincent and held a 12-10 edge in service aces. Regan led the Dolphins with four aces to go along with three kills.
The loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 7-8 overall on the season. Next up for the Dolphins is a date a CCNY on October 9. Match time with the Beavers is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
