Riverdale, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Volleyball team improved to 5-2 at home on Thursday night with a 25-19, 25-13 and 25-14 win over visiting John Jay. Freshman
Zana Daluz (Pawtucket, R.I.) recorded her eighth double-double of the season and
Allison Regan (Carmel, N.Y.) posted five service aces.
After splitting the first six points in the opening frame on Thursday, Mount Saint Vincent ran off six of the next eight points to build a 9-5 advantage.
Jennifer Roman (Queens Village, N.Y.) put away two kills for the Mount to spark the rally.
The Dolphins would not trail again the remainder of the first set and did not allow John Jay to get any closer then three points. An
Ashleigh Scozzari (New Rochelle, N.Y.) kill capped a 3-0 run to close the set and send Mount Saint Vincent to the one set lead.
The Dolphins carried the play in the second set and built a 7-3 lead out of the gate following a
Kristine DeMasi (Brooklyn, N.Y.) service ace. A 10-1 run late in the set was enough to give the Dolphins a 2-0 lead for the fourth straight match.
The Dolphins got off to a slow start in the final set, falling behind 3-0. The Mount battled back to tie the score at 3-3, but John Jay tallied four of the next five to regain the three point edge. The run was keyed by three Mount Saint Vincent errors.
Trailing 7-4, Mount Saint Vincent strung together 13 of the next 15 points to pull in front 17-9. Scozzari collected three of her 10 kills over that stretch for the Dolphins. The Mount would not allow the Bloodhounds closer then six the rest of the way as it picked up its ninth win of the season.
Regan had a strong night for the Dolphins after registering eight kills and hitting .304. She picked up five of the team's 13 service aces and also chipped in with a pair of digs and a block. She pushed her team lead in service aces to 51.
Scozzari put away at least 10 kills in a match for the 11
th time and has reached double-figures in each of the last four matches. She also picked up two digs on the night for Mount Saint Vincent.
Daluz continued her strong play with a match-high 23 assists to go along with 10 digs and four kills. DeMasi also turned in a strong effort with eight kills for the Dolphins along with 11 digs.
Roman, another newcomer, had a solid all-around night for Mount Saint Vincent after she wrapped up the match with three kills, three service aces and six digs.
Carly Jenkinson (Pacifica, Calif.) rounded out the night with a match-high 14 digs.
For the night, Mount Saint Vincent put away 34 kills to 17 for the visitors and hit .222 as a unit. Thursday's contest was also the 10
th time this season the Dolphins have recorded at least 10 service aces.
The win brings Mount Saint Vincent back to within a match of the .500 mark overall at 9-10. The Dolphins will look to match 2011's win total on October 18 when they travel to Lehman. Match time with the Lightning is set for 8:00 p.m.
