Newburgh, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Basketball team dropped its fourth straight game and fifth in its last six outings on Thursday night after a 71-38 loss to league favorite Mount Saint Mary. Senior
Kara McNish (Hawthorne, N.J.) was the lone Dolphin in double-figures with 10 points.
Mount Saint Vincent struggled from the field again on Thursday and shot under 30-percent from the floor for the third straight game after converting on a season-low 22.4-percent of its field goal chances.
The Dolphins only lead of the game came after a McNish bucket in the opening two minutes, before the Knights responded with an 11-0 run to take the lead for good in the game and open an 11-2 lead at the 15:11 mark of the first half.
The Mount would cut the deficit to three points after a pair of
Tanisha Montague (Brooklyn, N.Y.) free-throws with just over 13 minutes left before the break, but the Knights would extend the lead to 12 after back-to-back Rachel Perrone jumpers with just over seven minutes on the clock.
Mount Saint Mary would go on to shoot 56.7-percent from the floor in the first half on its way to a 40-25 advantage after 20 minutes of play. The Knights also converted three of their five three-pointers and were led by 15 points from Amanda Horvers before the intermission.
The Knights would pick right up where they left off coming out of halftime and held the Dolphins scoreless for the first 9:30 of the half. Mount Saint Mary would use a 21-0 run to open a 60-25 lead before
Brittany Griffin (Suffern, N.Y.) converted a lay-in for the Dolphins at the 10:30 mark of the half.
The Dolphins would be held to just 13 points in the second half and went just 4-for-28 from the floor. The Knights would take advantage of the cold shooting and convert 31 points on their way to the victory.
McNish did all of her scoring in the first half for the Dolphins and she also grabbed nine rebounds, six of which came on the offensive glass. Griffin and
Kelly Fraser (Staten Island, N.Y.) each scored six points, with Griffin also hauling in nine boards.
The Knights were paced by a game-high 26 points from Jen Mocanu who finished 12-for-18 from the floor. Horvers finished with 17 points and Perrone netted 10 in the winning effort.
The loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 3-8 overall on the season and to 0-4 in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins will look to get back into the win column on Saturday when they play host to Purchase. Tip-off with the Panthers is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
