Big Second Half Sends Mount Saint Vincent Past Staten Island

Amy Delva matched the team-high with five steals against Staten Island

Staten Island, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Basketball team used a 50 point second half on Tuesday to sneak past home standing Staten Island by a score of 75-70. A trio of Dolphins scored 10 points in the win, with senior Kara McNish (Hawthorne, N.J.) recording the 12th double-double of her career.
 
Mount Saint Vincent would not lead in the first half and fell behind by as many as 11 after a Nicole Quattrocchi triple with 54 ticks left before halftime. Andree DeLeon (Flushing, N.Y.) would answer for the Dolphins in the closing seconds to send the Mount to the break down by a score of 34-25.
 
The Dolphins shot just 31.4-percent from the field in the opening frame and just 2-for-6 from the free-throw line, while going nearly seven minutes in the period without scoring a point.
 
Staten Island built its first half lead by shooting just under 43-percent from the field and converting 8 of its 10 free-throws. The home team forced 20 Mount Saint Vincent turnovers in the opening frame and turned those into 16 points.
 
The Dolphins would get to within two points early in the second half on a Kelly Fraser (Staten Island, N.Y.) three-point play, but would not take the lead until the final nine minutes after Amy Delva (Nanuet, N.Y.) and Tanisha Montague (Brooklyn, N.Y.) converted buckets to start an 8-0 run for the Mount.
 
Delva would bookend the run with lay-ins and after her second with 8:02 left in regulation, the Dolphins held a 56-50 advantage. Mount Saint Vincent would not surrender the lead the rest of the night and saw its advantage swell to 10 points after a DeLeon bucket with just under six minutes to play.
 
Staten Island would make one last run at the Mount in the final two minutes of play when Quattrocchi nailed a three and Olivia Tierno converted a pair of free-throws to bring it to with three points twice in the late stages.
 
DeLeon would secure the victory for the Mount, as she went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line and the team went 6-for-6 over the final 1:40 of regulation time.
 
The Mount shot an impressive 46.3-percent from the floor after halftime and went 3-for-5 from behind the arc to overtake Staten Island. DeLeon scored eight of her 10 points after the break and finished the day 3-for-9 from the field and 4-for-4 from the line. She also grabbed a pair of rebounds and led the team with four assists.
 
McNish continued her steady play in the front court for the Dolphins after totaling 10 points on 5-for-11 shooting to go along with a game-high 14 rebounds. She also blocked a shot for the Mount and swiped a pair of steals.
 
Brittany Griffin (Suffern, N.Y.) also reached double-figures with 10 points to go along with seven rebounds. Delva chipped in with seven points, six rebounds and a team-high five steals, while Fraser netted eight points and secured eight rebounds. Sarah Kluth (Lynbrook, N.Y.) totaled eight points and five steals, while Desiree Rosa (Dumont, N.J.) knocked down three triples on her way to nine points.
 
Quattrocchi led all scorers with 18 points after going 5-for-9 overall and 4-for-6 from long distance. Tierno added 14 points and Danielle Kartalis posted 10 for Staten Island, while Jaclyn Tocco posted six points and led all players with six assists.
 
Overall in the game, Mount Saint Vincent shot just under 40-percent from the floor, but dominated in the paint after scoring 46 points inside. The Dolphins also totaled 34 points off of 32 Staten Island turnovers and saw its bench outscore the home team's by a 31-27 count.
 
The win pushes Mount Saint Vincent to 2-3 overall on the season. The Dolphins will look to even their record next Tuesday when they play host to cross-town rival Lehman. Tip-off with the Lightning at the Sharp Center is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
