Riverdale, N.Y. – Needing a win in the 2011 season finale to clinch a berth in the Skyline Conference Tournament, the College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Volleyball team scored a 3-0 win over league rival Purchase on Saturday afternoon. In her final regular season home match, senior
Maureen Metzner (Mineola, N.Y.) matched her career-high with nine kills.
The Dolphins never trailed in the match and took an early one set advantage after hitting .333 as a squad in the opening stanza. Freshman
Sungji Clarke (Tarrytown, N.Y.) picked up three of the team's 11 kills in the set, as the Mount committed just three attack errors.
Metzner picked up five of her nine kills in the contest in the second set as the Mount held off the Panthers to take a commanding two set advantage. The Dolphins closed out the match after opening a 6-0 lead in the deciding frame.
Erin MacBride (Merrick, N.Y.) keyed the good start for the Mount with a pair of service aces.
Metzner finished her second straight match with nine kills and led all players in the match in the category. She also added six digs to the winning effort along with a pair of assists and a service aces.
Clarke and
Kristine DeMasi (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each added six kills for Mount Saint Vincent, with DeMasi lifting nine digs and Clarke recording the team's only team block. DeMasi also finished the day with a pair of service aces.
MacBride finished the contest with a match-high 24 assists and closed out a strong effort with five kills and five defensive digs. She also led the team with three service aces on Saturday. Senior
Renee Reynes (Bronx, N.Y.) lifted a team-high 14 digs, while classmate
Jessica Williams (Cornwall, N.Y.) finished off three kills and lifted three digs.
Purchase was paced on the day by six kills from Lindsay Froman and five from Olivia Mintz. Mickaela Olson led all players with a match-high 22 digs with Katie Westervelt posting 15 assists.
For the match, the Dolphins finished off 34 digs and hit .184 as a unit. Purchase lifted 51 digs on the day and each team finished the match with one total team block.
The win snapped a four match losing streak for the Mount and moves it to 10-19 overall on the season and to 4-5 in league play. Next up for the Dolphins will be a date in the Skyline Conference Tournament on Wednesday at an opponent yet to be decided.
