Yonkers, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Soccer team was dealt its ninth straight loss on Wednesday evening and closed the 2011 campaign with a 2-1 loss to Sarah Lawrence on Senior Night. Sophomore
Andres Romero (Port Chester, N.Y.) netted his second goal of the season for the Dolphins in the first half.
The visiting Gryphons got on the board first on Wednesday after some sustained pressure to start the game. Philip Naess opened the scoring at the 23:11 mark of the match after burying a feed from Rodrigo Cuenca inside the far post for the early 1-0 lead.
Mount Saint Vincent's deficit would last only two and a half minutes after Romero found the back of the cage to knot the score at a goal apiece. He took a free kick from the top of the box that bled through Sarah Lawrence's keeper at 25:41.
The two teams would remained deadlocked for the first 20 minutes of the second half until Cuenca capped off a big day with the game winning goal in the 67
th minute. He won a free ball just outside the box on the right wing and tucked a shot inside the near post at 66:55 mark of the contest.
The Dolphins would get some pressure in the final five minutes of the contest and saw shots from
Javier Mandujano (Norwalk, Conn.) and
Joseph Rosado (Highland Falls, N.Y.) just miss the target. Rosado came close in the 87
th minute when he headed a feed from Romero off a corner kick over the cage.
Senior goalkeeper
Matt Calandrillo (Cold Spring, N.Y.) closed out the season by making five saves for the Mount. His counterpart, Elliot Warkus picked up the win and also made five stops on the night.
Overall in the contest, Sarah Lawrence outshot the Mount 18-14, including 11-6 in the first period. The Gryphons also held the advantage in corner kicks at 6-4, while fouls on the night were whistled against Sarah Lawrence by a count of 16-8.
Mount Saint Vincent closes out the 2011 season with a 1-11 overall record.
