Women's Lacrosse hammers Maritime College 26-1 for season-opening victory

Adams, Martin score five goals apiece; Dolphins score 19 goals during first half; MSV faces Gordon College on Monday in Florida

(Throgs Neck, NY) - Junior Cyndi Adams (Mechanicsville, MD/Chopticon HS) and freshman Kelly Martin (North Rockland, NY/North Rockland HS) scored five goals apiece and the Dolphin defense allowed only three shots and a single goal as the Mount Saint Vincent Women's Lacrosse team opened the 2007 season with a 26-1 win over Maritime College during a game played at Maritime. The Mount won their season opener for the second time during their three years of existence, and Maritime lost the first varsity lacrosse game in the history of the program.

Mount Saint Vincent wasted little time getting on the board as Adams scored an unassisted goal only nine seconds into the game to put the Dolphins on the board. On the ensuing draw, junior Alexis Alessi (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside HS) scooped a ground ball and fired a pass to Martin, who made a spectacular move to the net and fired a high shot into the net to make it 2-0. Mount Saint Vincent won the next draw, and freshman Khrystina Jackson (West Islip, NY/West Islip HS) found a wide open Maureen Payne (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Marian) who converted the shot to make it 3-0 less than a minute into the game. Seven different Dolphins scored during the first 10 minutes of play alone to give the Mount a 14-0 lead, and the Dolphins led 19-0 at halftime.

The second half saw Mount Saint Vincent score the first four goals to make it 23-0, and Maritime finally got on the board with 24 minutes left in the game when freshman Heather Christiansen (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin HS) converted a free position for the first varsity goal in Maritime history. However, the play marked the Privateers' last shot of the game as the Mount Saint Vincent defense played tremendously.

Also having big games for the Mount were sophomore Jenna McColgan (Lynbrook, NY/Malverne HS), who netted her first career hat trick, as did sophomore Stacie Tripp (Glen Cove, NY/Glen Cove HS) and freshman Katie Tucci (Baldwinsville, NY/Baldwinsville HS). Senior Beth Clark (Silver Spring, MD/St. Johns Prep) added a goal and three assists. Overall, Mount Saint Vincent owned a 57-3 shots advantage, and the Mount won 23 of the game's 29 draws.

Mount Saint Vincent returns to action on Monday, March 12 when they face New England powerhouse Gordon College. The game will take place at 7:00 p.m. in Wellington, Florida as part of the Mount's Spring Training trip.
