(Florham, NJ) – The third time was not the charm for the Mount Saint Vincent Women's Lacrosse team. Facing Montclair State for the third time in 21 days, Mount Saint Vincent was unable to hold off an incredible Red Hawk attack and lost to Montclair, 20-0 in the ECAC Upstate Semifinals on Saturday. The game was Mount Saint Vincent's second post-season game of the 2006 season after a 9-8 regular season finish, and their first-ever appearance in the ECAC Championships. 2006 was the Mount's second season with Women's Lacrosse as a varsity sport.
Montclair State (15-3), who defeated the Mount 17-3 on April 22 and 18-1 in the Skyline Conference Semifinals on April 26 en route to their first-ever Skyline Conference crown, jumped all over the Dolphins, scoring five times during the game's first 10 minutes and 16 times during the first half overall to put the game way out of reach. The Red Hawks outshot the Mount, 36-2 and owned a 15-6 edge in draw controls as they maintained possession for much of the game and handed Mount Saint Vincent its first ever defeat by shutout.
Mount Saint Vincent was led by junior goalie Tara Staples (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendahowa HS), who made five saves, and sophomore defender Michelle Yarger (Chantilly, VA/Chantilly HS), who caused four Red Hawk turnovers and collected a team-high four ground balls.
While Mount Saint Vincent was eliminated from the ECAC Championships, the defeat does not come with a price as the Dolphins are expected to return every single member of the 2006 team for the 2007 campaign and should be competitive for post-season competition once again.
