(Montclair, NJ) – Sophomore
Amanda Nadhir (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Marian) scored her 24th and 25th goals of the 2006 season, and goalie
Tara Staples (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendahowa HS) stopped six out of 12 shots during the second half of play, but the Mount Saint Vincent Women's Lacrosse team saw their two-game winning streak snapped, 17-3 at the hands of Skyline Conference leader Montclair State during a game played at Montclair on Saturday. With the loss, the Dolphins drop to 7-8 for the 2006 season and finish the season 3-3 in Skyline Conference play, but still secured the fourth seed for next week's Skyline Conference playoffs when they will travel to face top-seeded Montclair State on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
Mount Saint Vincent actually controlled play for the game's first six minutes, but were unable to score on their first three shots. From that point, Montclair went on a roll, outscoring the Mount 7-1 during a 3:40 span to take a commanding lead only 10 minutes into the game. The lone Mount tally during the early going was by sophomore Maureen Payne (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Marian) on a free position shot at 21:57. Down 7-1, the Mount actually held the Red Hawks scoreless for more than 12 minutes late in the opening half, but Montclair outscored the Mount 4-1 during the final seven minutes of the opening stanza to take an 11-2 halftime lead.
The second half saw both teams tighten up on the defensive end as Staples entered the game and stopped the first five shots she faced, but a relentless Red Hawk attack allowed Montclair to extend the lead to 14 goals, with their final tally coming with 2:27 remaining in the game.
Turnovers plagued the Dolphins all afternoon as Mount Saint Vincent turned the ball over 31 times compared to Montclair's 20, while the Red Hawks enjoyed a 20-11 ground ball edge. Mount Saint Vincent was also unable to take advantage of numerous Montclair fouls as the Dolphins were 1 for 7 on free position shots.
Mount Saint Vincent is in the home stretch of the 2006 season as they travel to St. Joseph's (CT) on Monday for a 4:00 p.m. game that will have huge post-season implications as the Dolphins must win the game to remain eligible for ECAC tournament consideration. After Monday's trip to St. Joseph's and Wednesday's playoff game, the Mount will finish the 2006 regular season with a home game against Cazenovia on Saturday, May 6.
