Dolphins Falter Against Montclair State

Skyline Preseason Favorite Montclair State on Wednesday by a score of 21-9. The Dolphins were led by four goals from sophomore Jessie Mitchell (Suffern, N.Y.) in the contest.

The game was tightly contested over the first 6:30 of the opening half as the two teams scored two goals apiece. The Red Hawks jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead on goals from Lauren Adams and Maggie Fallon, before the Mount drew even with back-to-back goals from Mitchell and Kelly Martin (Stony Point, N.Y.). Following the Martin marker, Montclair St. outscored the Mount 9-4 to carry an 11-6 advantage into halftime.

The Red Hawks played a tight defensive game in the second half and allowed just three Mount Saint Vincent goals in the period. After Lauren Perla (Holbeook, N.Y.) scored with 23:56 left in the second, the Red Hawks reeled off seven straight tallies before Mitchell and Stacie Tripp (Glen Cove, N.Y.) scored two straight for the Mount. Marykate DiBenedetto closed out the scoring in the game for the visitors with her fifth goal of the game with 6:17 left in the contest.

Montclair St. held the advantage in every statistical category on the night. The Red Hawks outshot the Dolphins 38-21, picked up 29 groundballs to just 13 for the Mount and won 17 draw controls to 15 for Mount Saint Vincent. Montclair St. was successful on 12 of its 14 clearing attempts in the game.

Mitchell had a strong all around game for the Dolphins on Wednesday, posting her four points. She also picked up a pair of groundballs, caused a turnover and led the team with five draw controls. Kim Freaso (Setauket, N.Y.) picked up two groundball and forced three turnovers in the contest.

Montclair St. (4-8, 3-1 Skyline) had seven players record at least two points with Fallon leading the way with six on two goals and four helpers. Kayla Henderson and DiBenedetto each scored five times, with DiBennedetto becoming the fifth player in school history to reach the 200 point milestone. Tracey Manella made seven saves for the Red Hawks to post the win in the cage.

The loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 6-4 overall on the season and back to .500 at 2-2 in the Skyline Conference. Next up for the Dolphins in their home finale on Saturday against Maritime. The contest will be played at Maritime with opening draw slated for 4:00 p.m.
