Purchase, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Lacrosse team used a 14 goal first half to propel it to a 19-4 league win on Saturday afternoon over visiting Sage.
Kelly Martin (Stony Point, N.Y.)
led 12 different goals scorers with four goals, while
Jenna McColgan (Lynbrook, N.Y.) added three assists.
After Sage opened the scoring on a Brianna Thompson free-position goal 58 seconds into the contest, the Dolphins reeled off 11 straight goals to open a 10 goal lead with 12:37 left in the first half. Martin scored all four of her goals over that stretch, including a pair of free-position tallies.
Thompson broke up the Mount's run of 11 straight goals with her second marker of the half before the Dolphins responded with three straight goals to close the half and take a 14-2 lead into the intermission. Mount Saint Vincent outshot Sage 20-3 in the opening half and won 10 of the 17 draw controls.
The Dolphins scored the first three goals of the second half and five of the seven overall to secure the win. The 19 goal output on Saturday is the fourth time this season that the Dolphins have scored at least 18 goals and the team has outscored its opponents 103-38 through the first six games of the campaign.
Martin finished the day with five points overall with her four goals to go along with an assist. Jessie Mitchell (Suffern, N.Y.) added three goals in the contest and also finished with five draw controls, three caused turnovers and seven groundballs.
Sophomore Kristen LeGeyt (Stony Point, N.Y.) added a pair of goals, an assist and three groundball balls, while Stacie Tripp (Glen Cove, N.Y.) netted two goals and picked up one groundball.
McColgan scooped six groundballs in the game for the Mount and junior Katie Tucci (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) chipped in with a goal, six groundballs and a team-high four caused turnovers.
Jackie Horn (Setauket, N.Y.) earned the win in goal by making a single save in the first half. She also scored a goal in the second period and picked up a groundball. Karen Laurent (East Elmhurst, N.Y.) made five saves in the second half for the Dolphins.
For the game Mount Saint Vincent held the edge in shots 34-11, groundballs 41-26 and draw controls 15-10. The Mount was also successful on 11 of its 14 clearing attempts in the game. The Dolphins also finished the game a perfect 3-3 on free-position attempts.
The win gives the Dolphins five wins in its first six contests to open the season and moves to 5-1 overall on the season and to 1-1 in the Skyline Conference. Next up for Mount Saint Vincent is a non-conference road game at Scranton on March 31. Opening draw is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
