(Valhalla, NY) - 55-3. In any sport at any level, being outscored 55-3 over the course of a season is a tell-tale sign that one team has established a significantly higher level of play than another. And during the 2006 Women's Lacrosse season, being outscored 55-3 was a fact of life during three games against

Montclair State. During the regular season, Montclair finished an undefeated Skyline Conference campaign with a 17-2 win over the Mount. During the Skyline Conference Semifinals, the Red Hawks cruised to an 18-2 win. A week later at the ECAC Semifinals, Montclair scored a 20-0 victory en route to their first-ever ECAC Championship. And with not a single starter having graduated, the Red Hawks entered Saturday's regular season meeting with the Mount thinking that the 2007 season would bring more of the same. They thought wrong. During a spectacular early effort, Mount Saint Vincent held the lead for much of the early going and trailed only 5-3 at halftime. However, the second half proved to be a different story as Montclair got on track and scored a 13-5 win ... but it wasn't easy.
Mount Saint Vincent opened the scoring at 26:58 when junior Chanel Comis (Durham, NC/Cardinal Gibbons) scored a spectacular goal to give the Mount their first-ever lead on Montclair State. The Dolphins ultimately took five shots during the game's first 11 minutes, but Montclair turned back the Mount each time. The Red Hawks (10-2, 5-0 Skyline Conference) finally got on the board at 17:55, and then scored again at 12:40 to take the lead, but just when it seemed that Montclair was beginning to roll, the Mount struck back. Junior Cyndi Adams (Mechanicsville, MD/Chopticon HS) scored unassisted at 11:23 to tie the score once again. The Red Hawks pulled away with goals at 4:31 and 1:44 to make it a 4-2 game, but Adams scored her second of the day at 1:23 to make it 4-3. However, a Montclair State goal with 37 seconds remaining in the first half extended their lead to 5-3 at the break.
Mount Saint Vincent made it a 5-4 game to open the second half when freshman Kelly Martin (North Rockland, NY/North Rockland HS) stole a pass during a Montclair State clear and scored a beautiful goal. However, that was as close as the Mount would get. Montclair State went on a 7-0 run over a 14-minute span to extend the lead to 12-4. Freshman Khrystina Jackson (West Islip, NY/West Islip HS) converted a free position shot at 11:18 to make it 12-5, but a Red Hawk goal 15 seconds later allowed for the 13-5 final. The Dolphin defense did not allow a Montclair goal during the final 11 minutes of play.
Overall, Montclair State held a 32-22 advantage in shots, a 31-23 edge in ground balls, and the Red Hawks won 11 out of 20 draw controls. Mount Saint Vincent goalies Jackie Horn (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville HS) and Nicole Fortier (East Lyme, CT/East Lyme HS) combined to make 13 saves.
Mount Saint Vincent returns to action on Monday, April 23 when they travel to Centenary College for a crucial Skyline Conference match-up. A Mount Saint Vincent win will clinch their second Skyline Conference playoff berth in as many seasons.
