Dolphins Edged By Kean In Tough Skyline Conference Tilt

Lacrosse team was nipped by Kean 14-13 on Senior Day Saturday afternoon. Following the game, Adams, Erin Davies (Islip, NY), Marie Garcia (Medford, MA), Alexis Alessi (Rockville Centre, NY), Cynthia Osorio (Oceanside, NY) and Chanel Comis (Durham, NC) were all honored for their commitment to the program over the past four years.

The game was a back-and-forth affair from the start. Mount Saint Vincent jumped out to a 4-0 lead with 23:08 left in the first half. Mitchell scored the first two goals of the game and then Adams and Perla each added one for the Mount. Kean would answer with three goals to cut the lead to 4-3, but the Mount answered with goals from Martin and Adams to open a 6-3 lead with 14:36 left before halftime.

Following Adams' goal at the 14:36 mark of the first, the Dolphins would go scoreless until and unassisted tally from Perla almost 10:00 into the second half. In that stretch Kean scored nine goals to open a 12-6 lead. After Perla ended the drought, Kean used goals from Cristin Califf and Stephanie Cirino to take a 14-7 lead with 11:31 left in regulation.

Following the Cirino marker, it was the Dolphins turn to go on a run. After falling behind 14-7, Mount Saint Vincent scored the final six goals of the game to get within 14-13 with 56 ticks left in regulation. Kelly Martin (Stony Point, NY) started the run with 6:56 left and Perla finished a free position shot with just under a minute left to get the Mount within striking distance. Kean would win the ensuing draw control and burn the clock to hang out for the win.

Perla finished the game with five points on her three goals and two assists. Adams also added an assist, as did Davies. Garcia finished the game with three assists, two groundballs and a draw control. Katie Tucci (Baldwinsville, NY) posted a goal, an assist and a groundball in the game.

Kim Freaso (Setauket, NY), Alessi and Mitchell led the team with four groundballs each on the afternoon. Alessi also led the team with four draw controls on the day and chipped in a caused turnover. Davies added three caused turnovers and three groundballs.

Jackie Horn (Setauket, NY) went the distance in goal for the Mount and made 11 saves, including eight in the first half. She also chipped in with three groundballs. Her counterpart from Kean, Ashlie Berghold made nine stops in the win.


Cirino led the Cougar offensive attack with six goals, with Amanda South adding five markers. Rosalia Romeo finished the day with a goal and three assists for Kean. 

Statistically, the game was as tightly contested as the score indicated. Kean held the edge in shots at 29-25 and in groundballs 30-29. Turnovers were 27-26 against the Cougars, but Kean held the advantage in draw controls 16-13. The Cougars used 12 free position shots to their advantage, scoring on six. Mount Saint Vincent went 1-3 in the same category.

The loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 7-7 on the season overall and to 3-1 in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins will close out the regular season on Monday night when they travel to Montclair State. The league contest is slated for 7:00 p.m.
